Im trying to get my act together and put together a cohesive look/style for my business. How did you come up with your style. Any meaning behind the color choices you used, or did you just go with colors you like. Do you think your branding effectively relates what you are doing as a photographer and what you are selling as a business?

my style is pretty simple and plain, which is how i usually like to present things, despite my outgoing nature. i try not to let this simple and plain style to my photographs, though. you can check out my site at www.bonnetlane.com. i would say just go with what feels right for you!

How far does that carry over though. Do you have a total identity package that incorporates everyhing? Does your site match your business cards, letter head, packaging?

I found this site to be quite helpful and I'm sure it will answer your color questions.

Ideally, I want to go black and white with red accent. I figure black and white always have a certain elegance to them, and the red just catches the eye. I don't know. I have to work on it.

Adobe Kuler is one of the best sites around. Definitely makes combining colors in an attractive way much easier, and helps you find those slight shades that really help set an identity.

The way I see it, if you have good taste with design and color, go ahead and show your personal style. If not, get a designer. hahaha. Or a combo of both. I used template based SquareSpace for my website so most of the substance of the design is taken care of, and I choose the color combos. Ask others, both friends and strangers what they think of your colors/designs.

I try to keep it all similar, from business cards to brochures, to the site, to shirts. They all have something tying them together. Not the SAME, but they all relate. Example, brochure design aimed at restaurant owners has the same thumbnail grids that are throughout the site, but arranged differently. See it here.

I went through about 5 logo and colour scheme changes for my site and literature until I found the one that i'm totally happy with.

I would make something cool, then think it was lame about a month after. I was trying to be too flashy and glitzy or 'unique' so i had a look at the mmost recognisable logos/typefaces around like Microsoft, Adidas, Nike, McDonalds, Visa etc etc and they all have something simple and unmistakable. No glitz and no flashy superfluous crap.

The colours are important I think. I use white and a warm orangey/ochre colour because I personally love it and it goes very well with black.

See it here:

Also, if you put it on a photo as a watermark it has to look like it belongs there and if you have a giant scripted swirly 'signature' thing, they usually end up looking crap. I designed mine so it would fit into a box (thus meaning it could go on caps, mugs, shirts, pens etc) and its also a vector so can be scalable to any size.

ETA: Yes, I use the logo on my biz cards, invoices, letterheads and everything else really.

I paid a graphic designer to come up with a logo for me. Sat down and discussed what I want my work to evoke, and found a logo to go along with it. It's not cheap, but it gets good results, IMO...Check it out:
