Ok, here it goes everyone! The Official, Unofficial Water Drop Challenge!

How it works--this challenge is open to anyone who has never entered a water drop (or other liquid/drop combination) into a challenge.

1. Post your water drop pictures, successes, failures, tips and tricks in this forum throughout the month of August.
2. By midnight, on August 31st, everyone who hasn't previously entered a water/other drop picture into a challenge must select their final water (or other) drop picture and post it to Water Drop pictures to be judged
3. IreneM has graciously agreed to judge the competition, and she will provide a ribbon to go to the top five entries.

btw, if you have entered pics like this into challenges, feel free to shoot and upload them into this forum--however, you are not eligible for the competition itself, but we'd love to see your pictures and get some advice!!

Oh...my....GAWD...!

Just what we need around here is an entire new cross-section of DPCers actually training to shoot waterdrops! The mind boggles at the thought!

Actually, this sounds like a fun thing to do, for those whose idea of "fun" can be stretched to spending hours and hours and hours making a humongous mess in an attempt to freeze the invisible :-)

sounds like my type of thing! My husband would say that I'm an expert at spending hours on making huge messes!

We've gone 4 posts without a picture in this thread, so I'm going to jump in and be the first to submit one of my oldies just for show and tell. I said in the comments of this photo "Sigh, I'm such a sellout", but in all honesty these shots are really kind of fun. I'll be keeping my eyes out for an interesting idea to submit for this side challenge. Nevermind that, I somehow misread the rules and since I've entered one in a challenge I can't play. Boo!

My set up for my oldie here was horrible and decently dangerous. At the time I just had a pair of macro flashes that don't put out a ton of light especially when diffused. I tried lowering the ambient light and using my two little flashes, but that wasn't freezing the water and giving me the look I wanted. My solution was get as much light in the sink as possible. I turned the bathroom overhead heat lights on (they're crazy bright), put my metal desk lamp up-side-down in the sink along with the flashes, and boosted the shutter speed until I consistently got decent shots (1/1600). I had the faucet on just barely a dribble and was using a spoon (after my finger got tired) to flick the water into drops on the drain.

After about 30 minutes I'd taken a hundred or so shots, was sweating like crazy from the heat lamps, and the lightbulb and metal dome shade of the lamp were drenched in water. I figured I should probably stop before I passed out and electrocuted myself.

Does it have to be water or will any liquid be ok?

I'm not eligible, but here's proof that water drop shots can be profitable:

Wow, in Hamilton they still pay for photography? Here they expect everything for free! Congrats.

Probably because you entered it this year AND it was a free study!

Ernie, I think what Richard was saying was (as you mentioned in your comments) that a) yes its a cliche shot and a year is a long time at dpc and b) a FS seems to get the harsher voter with cliche shots. However I may be wrong ;)

Hmmm, I'm tempted to say it counts, but that seems churlish in a side challenge--so you just have to drop a liquid drop--no more solids for you!

Yes and no wendy...

Success! The current queue is empty due to the hard work of critique club members like yourself!

Try back soon!

If you're up for it, you can take a stab at one of the 57,887 older requests that were never fulfilled.

Damn, Basssman7 just critiqued a 3 year old image of mine, it was a splash shot so guess I'm out of this SC :(
