I am looking into buying a Nikon D70, and wondered what everyone thought would be a good macro lens for this? I am fairly new to whole slr scene, only having a nikon N70 (film slr), and a standard lens (It is an AF Nikkor lens, 35-80mm, 1:-5.6D, F4-22). I don't have a large budget, so I would like to get the most bang for my buck! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I've got the sigma 105mm macro lens and it is excellent. It's around 340 USD new although I'm sure you could shop around or even get one on ebay for much less.

Rented a Nikon 60mm AFD macro 1:1 and was impressed. Two drawbacks - Pretty pricey compared to 3rd party lens and requires that you get in tight. I was taking pictures of a small daisy and I wanted to fill frame with half the flower. The working distance required for this shot was so close that I think a ring flash would have been helpful. So, I think it would be difficult to photograph insects on a flower. Think about it - would you land on a flower with a lens 10x your size only 4cms away??? On the positive, this lens is fast with lots of dof control and good for portraits. Brand new - costs $650CDN.

I'll be trying the Nikon 105mm AFD macro 1:1 sometime next week. Supposedly, the 105 gives more working room for lighting and stuff.

Also consider the Tamron SP 90mm, folks swear by this one... you could see sample images on pbase.
