Hi, ok, I had an SB-900 with a Universal Gary Fong Lightspere...

the problem is that when I install the lightsphere univeral it pushes in the two little tabs that automatically make the flash go to 10mm and lock there... (The tabs that would be pushed in i think when a gel is installed...

if i wiggle it around just right, it will move off the little tab switch and then the flash will adjust from 17-50mm as I zoom my lens in and out... but everyonce in a while i bump it a tiny biut then it goes back to locking at 10mm... this wasn't a problem with my fitted ligthspere on my old SB-800...

What do I do??? does this happen to anybody else? I'd only assume that it matters what zoom the flash is set it...

any help would be greatly appreciated thanks!!! =)

Have you contacted the Fong man tech support? They might offer some help.

Is there anyway to get that IKEA stuff in the states? I searched the US site and it came up with something totally different for drawer mat and I can't find it in the collections online...

This may help clear things up. Cannot seem to find it on the ikea.ca site but I'm sure they have it. Shall I pick you up some?

I was hoping to just find it online and order it so I didn't have to putz around stores explaining this stuff to worthless clerks. Sometimes you realize how much you take online simplicity for granted. Anyway, I'll go look around my local stores for something similar. Thanks for the DIY link though.

To be of actual use to the OP... Why don't you just block off where it depresses the tabs? Just put something that keeps it from directly contacting the tabs underneath the velcro... functions like a spacer.

I believe there is a way to manually set the SB-900's mm length. Check the manual.

No you can't if it depresses the diffuser tabs, that's the whole point here. Depressing the tabs automatically opens up the zoom all the way, regardless of what you set, in order to take advantage of the diffuser.
The only other choice you have from inserting a spacer is that you may be able to set the zoom manually after you turn on the function for the broken wide angle adapter. I think this might override the auto wide zoom function of the camera, but you lose the auto-zoom which I think is what you really want anyway. For the feature I speak of, consult C-25 in the manual, "Zoom position setting if the built-in wide-flash adapter is broken."

Thanks for the ideas (sorry for the late reply and thanks)

I think the best way is to cut or melt a little hole in the lightsphere so that the tab does not get depressed... should work fine after that...

I just heard back from Gary Fong Support... they said that the focal length doesn't matter with the use of a lightsphere... you can even watch one of gary fong's little you tube instructional videos (also on DVD included in box) where he states that you may want to try flipping down the little reflector on your flash to help diffuse the flash, BUT on an SB-600 which he uses in some of the videos locks at 14mm as soon as you flip that sucker down... so maybe it doesn't matter???

either way, i'll cut or melt a notch for the little tab that keeps locking the focal length at 10mm... =)

thanks again...

blah blah blah set the zoom manually after you turn on the function for the broken wide angle adapter. blah blah consult C-25 in the manual, "Zoom position setting if the built-in wide-flash adapter is broken."

For the record I tried this and it doesn't work, for any thread necromancers.
