Some excellent shots. But he gets a bit too HDR/saturation happy now and then. There were blue skys in a few shots that just don't exist on this planet. I understand it's artistic, and I don't mind a little extra color from time to time, but there was some overkill there.

I recommend watching the War Photographer, which is a documentary about James Nachtwey. He's a giant in the world of photo journalism and easily one of our greatest photographers living today.

I wanna say bare bulb positioned one astronomical unit away from his subjects. I've had a chance to use it on a occasion and it rocks!

A bare bulb, 1 au away from the subject, breaking through a large window with a bounce card and 1 reflector.

Seriously, I have to get that movie. He reminds me of....ME only way, way cooler. ;)

Just wanted to add -- I've been looking for this movie ever since it was mentioned here and I saw the trailer online. Finally just brought it on amazon (I couldn't rent it anywhere) and wish I had done that from the beginning and not wasted time looking for it elsewhere.

This is a SERIOUSLY incredible documentary. I mean the kind of movie that I can only compare to a religious experience. Totally blew me away. Going to watch it again (and again, I imagine), but need some time away from it to process what I've just seen. Just... incredible. Highly, highly, highly recommended.

Amazon link.

yanko, Thank you SO MUCH for mentioning it.

Along with natural light, another lesson of Nachtwey's images is his relentlessly flawless framing - or if one prefers the term crop, which may be described as full frame, at the least in aspect ratio.

I like how that documentary kind of showed that he is pretty messed up emotionally/mentally from all the stuff he has seen.

It takes a certian kind of guy to do the stuff he does, while I wish I could do it, I don't think I could cope with it.

Really? Not to be argumentative, but I didn't get that impression at all. I more agree with your next sentence:

Yes, definitely. I didn't get the perception that he has been actually "messed up," but more that he simply has a personality type that can exist and flourish under those extreme conditions.

While I don't for a moment put myself into the same class as he, I can identify to some extent -- as when I worked in EMS and rescue for many years, I felt much of the same traits as were ascribed to him -- being calmer in the face of chaos, thriving on the madness going on around him, being at his best when the worst is going on around him, etc. Again, I'm not saying for a second that standing on the front lines of a conflict is the same as riding on an ambulance or rescue vehicle -- but I see parallels, and I could (in my mind, at least), identify with his situation, and even felt a substantial "wishing I was there, too," as bizarre as that might sound.

Like I told my wife -- if I had this inspiration at a different time in my life, and I wasn't "tied down" (I don't mean that in a bad way) and already on the path in life I'm on now, I could see myself picking up and trying my hand at a similar path to what James has taken. I don't think for a second that I am as gifted, nor would do as well -- I'm just saying I can completely see the attraction to it -- the need to show others what's happening, and the desire to "be there" in the chaos and do something that tries to make sense of it, or at least bear witness to it.

Anyway, enough rambling. I'm trying to figure out a way to put this inspiration to good use here at home, and I think I actually have a really great project all this energy and ideas will lend itself to very, very well. Stay tuned for more details... ;)

I love this photography. I'm not a fan of the interface/site. Too many bells and whistles.
