In the recently closed, still able to vote on challenge, Portraits without Children I have an observation:

There is an effect many photographers put to good use where the eyes of the subject are processed quite a bit. Whitened, contrast added to the irises Along with good studio lighting it is quite striking.

When the same effect is applied to a more traditional portrait some things throw me off as a viewer. If the eyes aren't evenly lit, but after processing the eye that is more shaded looses this nuance, something seems off. Also high contrast on the eyes while the rest of the photo is soft focused is unsettling as well. The end result for me personally is this. Initially the photo is quite striking, eyes coming out at you, then after a moment something isn't quite right, like the eyes came from another photo... or maybe those silly glasses with eyes painted on them.

I have seen tutorials on the studio effect, but I havent seen much on eye processing for regular portraits. Or more specifically tips and hints to avoid the pitfalls of overprocessing eyes.

Chad, they will shut this down as you are not to discuss images currently in voting. I know the shot and this may create a problem for voters.

Have a look here. Its an old tutorial, but I still use this technique with my clients portraits. Note, I do not whiten the eyes and I avoid that "fake eye" look by not introducing light that was not there. Hope its helpful.

I don't see this as calling out any one shot in particular. Many of us overdo the pimping of the eyes. It is a learned skill to know when it is just enough and when it is too much. In fact, I would prefer if someone leaves a comment about it, should they feel I took it too far.

I made sure not to mention any particular photo just for that reason, and I did see "over-pimping" in more than one.

I am also glad to see that I am not the only one who noticed. Im off to check out that tutorial now.

I thought I knew which one it was also, but it seems to have disappeared. One was DQ'd already. I must have guessed wrong. There is one other one that's a maybe...
