I just bought a used Canon EOS D30 on eBay and I'm thinking of getting an external flash for it. I know nothing about flashes, however. Any buying advice?

Get the Speedlite 550EX flash by Canon, I love it and is worth every penny.

Basically two choices from Canon...420Ex or 550EX. I wouldn't go with anything less as the 420EX is the cheapest one out there with a tilting and swiveling head. Tilting and swiveling is crucial. The 420EX is a good choice if you're not shooting professionally or need manual control. I do believe the D30 has flash exposure compensation, so the 420EX is a good choice over the 550EX, which is larger and quite a bit more expensive. I do like mine. The main advantage that the 550EX has is that it will act as a master flash and can trigger other flash units (ie 420EX or 550EX) that are off-camera. I justified the 420EX purchase by saying that if I ever wanted to do this I'd still have to buy two flashes.

Ok Im glad I saw this. I just picked up the 550ex 2 pack plus ST-E2 from B&H. I have no idea how to use them.... I know this sounds stupid but I am really no good with the flash. I tried doing some protraiture for my mother (needed a pic for a newsletter) and the results were horrible. Can someone please point me in a good direction with the 550?? I am off to Ireland this coming weekend for my cousin's wedding and would like to know what I am doing before I get there. Also, can someone reccomend a good flash bracket for the 10D and 550ex?

thanks!

If you are a bit short of cash and like the 550ex look at the sigma 500dg super, most of the tools of the 550 at half the price, the biggest difference being the build quality. Look at it before you decide, and both leave the 420 in the dust.
