Has anyone ever taken pictures of a protest before? I am planning on doing this on Wednesday, May 19, so I wanted to see what everyone else has done. My school is having a walk-out/protest against our "corrupt" administration on this day. I want to make sure I get some awesome shots of this. We are having statewide (Colorado) media coverage for this (town population is like 11,000. it is Alamosa for any of you familiar with Colorado), it is going to be a huge event... Hopefully! *knock on wood* thanks

Brad,

Just try to shoot it as if you were a "journalist" not an interested party. That's not easy but you will find images that do and do not agree with what you might believe. Get them all. Even a dog peeing on a protestors leg should be captured. You can always edit them to your satisfaction later.

Lonny Shavelson has some posted at his site under the news links. Scroll through the list of stories covered on the left to find the ones which interest you.

I've been through Alamosa a couple times. Right at the south end of the San Luis Valley.
An old friend lives near there in Crestone. That entire valley, and especially Crestone is a very strange place.

Hey Bradical,

I thought nothing happened in Alamosa except going to Hooper to see the gators, to the tower to see-UFOs, or surf the dunes. Cool a protest in moosie. LOL Van in Pueblo

my suggestion is keep your camera at the ready and be prepared to take a lot of photos. i was in washington for the march for women's health and found it to be a very fruitful experience.

Hello Bradical,

I live in La Jara, only 15 miles south of Alamosa! So far, I haven't heard anything about your protest even though we get the Alamosa paper and I read every page.

It's nice to see another San Luis Valley person on DPC - I thought I was the only one.

I have a good feeling our admin talked to the valley courier and told them to not run anything about it (as if it would provoke us any more). However, there was an article in the Pueblo Chiefton a couple days ago. Here is a link to give further details about it EDIT: See below post* (this is my site, so I decided to add this on the home page).

That is exactly right! Although, I have never been to the UFO watchtower. I think that kinda crap is rediculous. But yes, a protest in moosie.

Perhaps, if you take some good pictures, the Courier or the Chieftain might be interested in them. I didn't see anything about it in the Chieftain, either - we get that paper, too. The Valley Courier probably won't even carry the story, though - you can find out much more local news reading the Chieftain.

You might want to ask that person if they've ever heard of the First Amendment, the legal concept of "prior restraint," or Watergate.

Actually, I don't believe she has! Our principal (Virginia Goddard just for reference) is the most restrictive person. Every month when we print our school newspaper, any story that might offend anyone in the slightest way (whether it is informative, like news, or a commentary, she has to approve of it first because if it talks about her bad, she will get really pissed off and has threatened to fire our sponsor before.

The cheifton ran it Friday. You can probably still find it on their website, that is where I read it. I don't know how to get to it, it was e-mailed to me with the link at the bottom of those pages that say "e-mail this to a friend" and I don't have the e-mail any more.

Back on the original topic, you might want to walk around the areas where the protest will be taking place, and scout out angles.
Since you have advance notice, you can go a day or two ahead and spot places where you can hop up on some steps, or whatever, and get a good view as the crowd arrives.

I shot a protest march last winter. I tried to capture the movement and atmosphere by using a long exposure (2 to 3 seconds) but also firing the flash on first curtain.

This froze the immediate action but then also captured the surge of the banners and people. It was quite effective and different.

I'll post a link when I get back home tonight. (I'm at work at the moment).

Ok... my edit from above is like this. I took the link to the site //www.elalarado.com off because by putting up the information about the protest on a school affiliated site, I dug myself a grave and am now in extremely huge trouble. My school has talked to attorneys and all. Oh and by the way, if anyone has had experience with this kinda silencing, some advice would be great. Also, on another note, as mentioned above, I stated how my school silences everything! Here is a perfect example!!!!!!!!!

Well, you can't use school resources for this kind of thing, regardless of the actual content.

I know there was a major case involving censorship of a school newspaper sometime in the last 5 years or so; I'd contact the ACLU, the Electronic Frontier foundation, and maybe a private attorney. Nolo Press has a lot of legal references for the non-lawyer, but it might be a little late to start that kind of research.

thanks! I will look into it. I have been advised as a minor to say nothing without a parent present, so I will probably have a little time this afternoon to do some research. Thanks again... and back on to the original topic with my next post. :-D

Ok, well... I have some bad news and some good news. The bad news is; there may be no protest due to lack of support. The seniors have been scared by the admin saying they will not get diplomas if they participate and the rest of the school is too "weak" in their beliefs to stand up for what is "right." The good news is; my website will be back up and running in no time. Due to the fact that the school does not pay for the site, technically, it is my site to do what I please. (According to the law). This is not a for sure cancellation though and I will be posting pictures the minute I get them (if I get them). Thanks for the contributions on this post, they have helped a lot (legally and photographically).

I took some pictures of the March for women's lives on the 25th of April. There were so many people, only a shot from the top of the Washington Monument would have done it justice. Being just one person in the crowd, I had to do a bunch of holding the camera way over my head kind of stuff, and it was tough to keep my hand steady. Pictures came out ok, though.
