5.09 for this work of art!?!?

Clearly you are all a pack of [unappreciative voters] and you can all [envy] my fully-extended 100-400 L !

I don't usually jump on the band wagon of negativity . . . however, I have to agree with you. Your photo is IMO better than average. I recently came back to DPC and after just 3 challenges remember why I left. You can look at my profile and the profiles of many others and see some really good photography that just did not score as well as you might think. The comments are also rather insignificant - case in point in my entry for the current challenge. Strikeslip, you have been around I am not saying that my work should consistently score high because there are times that I gamble and try something different from the cliche. However, I do not believe my portfolio is a 5.16 average. I do recall that the issue of voting has been pondered in many forums in the past. It is unfortunate that the old way of casting votes remains. For one, I think only having to vote for a percentage of the photos disadvantages all entries. I also think that somehow a fairer system of evaluating photos should be considered. Some voters also need to recognize their skill level and appreciate the varying skill levels of others and realize that photography is about creative captures.

My goodness, you're grouchy today.

If I had voted on this Challenge I'd have given it a high score. Anyone who gets this close - even with a 100-400 deserves some respect. I'd be worrying about which part of me was his next meal - not how sharp his teeth are.

there's a lot of power in this image. Congratulations for seeing it and showing it to the rest of us.

hmmmmmmm... I was going to submit this to the SC as I thought you were violating the rule on photographing artwork.. Looks a bit like one of those velvet paintings..

PS... I was just joking... :-)..

Left a comment. Basically the issue is blur. You may want to use blur for artistic reasons, but voters don't usually like it. They tend to vote even tougher in a free study. It is frustrating when we submit what we think is a great photo and the voters just don't go for it the way we think they should. If high point scoring photos are what you want, then think "National Geographic". Would they publish it? I had read once that they only print about one in ten thousand photos. I try to enjoy when I do score well and hopefully learn from the ones that don't and also try not to take the voting too personally.

Action and Wildlife shots have to be crystal clear sharp unless the lack of focus/sharpness somehow makes the image better.

Here, It would have been a standout image, but you are penalized sharply for 'flaw' of lack of clarity. Lack of clarity will, perhaps perversely, have a stronger negative impact on our perception than the positive effect of the cool characteristics of the shot. So that is when we see the strange result of a run-of-the-mill subject with perfect technicals beating out an above-average, but ultimately flawed shot.

Sorta like we'd rather eat a Big Mac than a Filet Mignon with a bug on it... hah

You need to learn to take more risks. This one would've scored MUCH higher, IMO:

I'm surprise Slippy has time to be grouchy. I would have thought he was busy adding new flags to his water drop pic and reselling it to other country newspapers by now.

Side by side comparison... it's because your photo has blur like JeffryZ said. I probably would vote 5 or 6 too :(

I liked it better before you cloned out the stud in his pierced tongue.

Some of the posters to this thread may not have noticed it but I think it made the shot!

Hey, don't blame me! I gave it a 7! I thought the slight blur added to the intensity of it. My own vicious and fearsome carnivore in the same challenge didn't even hit a 5, so enjoy your victory.

My recent experience has suggested that giant lizards are not high scoring cliche subjects. Somehow, staircases are quite fascinating and interesting to the DPC crowd, and we have many high scoring staircases. Go figure.

You might want to wipe off that L lens. I hear that saliva is really bad for it.

I can't understand why anyone would submit there work asking strangers to give their opinions of it and then complain about the opinions they give. It didn't take me long to realize that this site is based solely on the opinion of the individual. I voted in only one challenge and realized my opinions were based on what I liked and not on the strength of the image. I haven't voted since because I didn't want to bring down or inflate a score just because I liked the image. I have reviewed thousands of images to try and get a clue about what is being looked for and what I should focus my pictures on. I may submit to a challenge but I assure you I will take the scores and opinions with the proper attitude. If you don't want anyone's opinion then don't submit anything.

This is my favorite title for a DPC thread ever, a thought that I'm sure we have all had at some time :)

I just keep reminding myself, "This is DPC, it IS a popularity contest, if my work is too good for the masses to 'get' its their loss not mine" :)

Maybe so, but I still voted as if it were a Polar Bear.
