Well....I am finally on holidays. I only brought one of my 5D's and my 40D as a backup camera. Today was my second day and we head down to the beach. I went to take my first photo for the day and WTF....I can't focus.....I have no focusing....I go into the menu....I can't get out of my menu via the shutter button...I check my settings on my LCD...and my shutter won't take me out of them. The arrow in the exposure guide is gone. WTF!!!! I change lenses...nothing! Then suddenly it comes back...but wait...no more centre point focusing....only 9 point focusing...it won't let me focus and keep that focus while I recompose....nooooo....it changes focus to the sky all by its bloody self. Damn thing...my shutter button is dying...and no guarantee what the heck it will focus on...it now has a mind of its own. Dammit....my other 5D is over 1500 kms away and I am stacked with weddings on my return. I will not do weddings with a 40D as a back up...so what do I do?

I toddle off to the nearest shop and buy a 5D Mark II.....new Manfrotto, camera bag, batteries and another 8GB card (that was the largest they had). So finally....I bit the bullet and get the camera I had been putting off since it first came out.

Lesson learnt from holidays so far....make sure you take your credit card!!!!!

A week ago, I would have suggested leaving it on a park bench, and given you the date and time and exact location of a park near here to leave it in...but I just bought myself a 5D, so I guess you'd better pass your backup onto someone else. Can't wait to see your upcoming entries.

What a fantastic excuse. Ten out of ten!

Personally, I prefer excuses with a touch of excitement... e.g. "My camera 'fell' into the river while I was white-water rafting"

That thing has been worn out anyway! We accept used electronics here in Canada. Mainly at my address.
If you don't give it to someone who can pay to get it fixed(like Me). It will become just a prop! What a shame!

I shouldn't have read this thread. How depressing. Everybody else is buying new stuff and I'm having to sell off mine to live. Maybe someday I'll be able to replace all of it. Congrats anyway Judy on the new camera.

Good for you. I was going to suggest that you shoot with the old camera upside down to get away from only metering the sky, but I see that you have the problem under control.
I am happy to see that you got a new body! Many women would love to have one as nice as the one we have seen here at DPC. : ))

Hahahaha.....you lot are funny. As for dropping it in the water...that's DrAchoo's trick...I couldn't steal his idea...lmao!!

When I get back home in 4 weeks I will send the broken 5D away to get it fixed.....then it will be another backup. I will just use the good 5D as my backup and the 5DII as my main camera.

Last time I went on vacation and tried to pick up a new body while at the beach my wife slapped me.

Congrats Judi.

I can just see the smile on your face when you realized "oh darn mt 5D is broken* I'll have to get a MkII!".
Lucky for us you can only still use 720x720 of all those new pixels here :)

* well not so much broken that it wont be fixed

Well, you're not alone. Only reason I still have my camera and kit lens is that I've got a few things I need to photograph so I can sell them. Maybe when we get back to it in a few years 5DIIs and D3's will be cheap used. Or Oly will perfect the Pen and it will have a detachable rear LCD. Never post in these type threads, it'll just depress you and it ruins the atmosphere for those who don't have to worry. :)

Awww I am sorry for depressing people. Trust me...I was past the stage of depressed and verging on the edge of wild when my camera broke yesterday. But I am okay now...I just went outside the room and photographed some kitesurfers on the sparkling water. Now I feel better.
