I was wanting to go back to school here where I work because it's free for full-time employees. I'm still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up :P, but that a different subject.

When I was looking at the photography program I found the photography instructor's bio and here were her sample works. She is a graduate of Yale's photography program if I am not mistaken.

Am I missing something? I'm not all that impressed.

You are missing her inspiration, her artistic eye, and all the hard work she has put into making her art.

Honestly give me a school of hard knocks mentor any day and I'll learn way more then a "book smart" instructor
with years of art study.

Looks terrible to me, glad I am not in her class!

Obviously you don't appreciate the artistic nuances of laundry photography. You're not worthy of her tutelage. ;-)

they would so be on the last page, I guess I am not that artistic, apart from the underpants shadows, they are IM unartistic O,crap

I guess I'm not worthy either.

My wife keeps suggesting I ought to go to a local college for a "real" photography class. Your link reminds me that getting my weekly beating on this site is a better and less expensive education in photography.

It is possible that these images are simply illustrating certain things, rather than an example of her best work. much like a posting in a side challenge here is often not our best stuff, but examples of learning. F'rinstance, the shot of the undies on the line. I can see she was trying to illustrate how to look for interesting things in the ordinary, such as the shadows they casts. The one of the sheets drying could be showing how to look for an interesting play of light. They would certainly be more effective if they were more than snapshots. They would also be better if they used less JPEG compression. (Does she have an E-mail I can send one of my famous JPEG compression comments to?)

Underpants: artistic or voyeuristic? discuss.

I think I'll save that link! Every time I start feeling like I really, really suck I'll go look at those and give myself a pat on the back!

Nope, here is her main page with the samples at the bottom.

and who the heck wears underpants that size and style anymore?

Maybe she is just an "Out of the box" photographer. I think we need Posthumous or Ubique to examine these samples.

I really can't say whether these make me want to join the program here more or less. More because I almost feel like I could show off. Less, because it might just be a waste of time.

I probably will. It's free and we probably get to use free models like we did in drawing class. Anyway, can't hurt...

dpc world is pretty much post processing world. Once you are a dpcian you would find anything that is not post processed to death tasteless.

Give her a chance to put forward her point of view, who knows might end up teaching you something.

I thought they were kind of drab. You'd think she'd have better shots, and to be honest, more than just four. *shrug*
07/02/2009 01:20:53 PM · #15
I google'd her name and found more shots...

Honestly, there are 2 or so cool, creative ones, but either she is very average of my eye is completely and utterly 'untrained'.

True, however concepts such as composition come mostly from the camera side of the process. I don't see very effective composition in those shots. A couple of them almost work.

After looking through that second link to her work and reading her self bio, I can understand what she is documenting, but I still don't find most of them to be much more than the average snapshot.

They look like snapshots of someones backyard. Nothing impressive IMO. However, I would still take the classes if they are free. You may end up making some connections through them - meeting other local photographers, or at least being able to use equipment/software that the university owns. She probably knows a few people and once she is impressed with your work, may give you your own gallery showing on campus :)

if you read my comment fully, i meant that one should try to learn from everyone. Its not that since i think she is not at my level she could not teach me anything. One can learn a lot from anyone, one must be keen on learning.

I am very selfish when it comes to learning, i learn from everyone. I listen to everyone and see what can i learn. (Plus i am very willing to teach too, but that teaches me even more)

Agreed. I am now very interested in finding out what her class is like.

The fact is however, that these examples are advertising. They should make you want to take her class, so that you can learn to take such great photos yourself. How many of the pro's on this forum have photos like this displayed on their web site?

I still don't get where she is coming from with her sample and I've always hated photos of other peoples sculptures, but she has a lot to teach judging from her bio and I've decided to take her classes regardless. I've already taken the lower level classes years ago, so hopefully they'll let me jump into the upper level where I can really have some fun.

Plus, as it's been pointed out, I'll make some good contacts.

But still, seems like she could attract more students with at least better quality/quantity examples.

There are lots of pictures, outside the DPC world, that win contests. Put them up here and they'd get a low 5 score.

Exactly my point. I know someone here locally, who specializes in photos of building demolition. Most of his photos are pretty plain, but decent documentary images. When I first ran across his stuff, I didn't get it. Then I started realizing what he was documenting. I guess this woman has the same thing going with the laundry. Her photos still do not encourage me to take her class.

Please update us on the class, cynthiann. I'm really curious how this turns out.
