Backyard, Pacific Northwest, has wings but just sat there on this blue plastic toy while I got right up in his face.
Anyone know what it is? Some kind of Ant? |

By the back legs it looks like it's in the cricket/grasshopper family to me. Definitely not an ant. |

I can't find a single picture of a termite where it's hind legs rise above its abdomen. I wouldn't let those little mandibles scare you. Cricket I tells ya! |

As soon as I read your reply I went out to see if he was still around (I took the shots yesterday) - sure enough he was sitting right there - long enough to get two more shots before he flew off - not sounding or flying like a cricket, but whaddo I know.

Yeah, I had one of those sitting on my wall a couple weeks ago. He was clearly alive, moved his antennae when I blew on him, but wasn't in a hurry to go anywhere. The next day he was still there. The next evening he was belly-up on the deck... |

Really? No wings, different legs, are you sure? |

Go to whatsthatbug.com they have a pretty extensive collection of bug photos and, if you can't find it, you can email them and usually get a response. |

No doubt. You can see the wings folded back in Art's last posted photo. |

Yeah, that's the bug I saw. It makes sense; it was sitting a few inches from a woolly-bear caterpillar so had probably laid eggs in it. |
