bump?

Hey guys,
So, I took my 5D and 24-105mm lens on the Inca Trail hike in Peru about a month back, and it went through fairly rigorous treatment.
I haven't really used it since then, but I picked it up over the week and noticed that the image stabilization was "jumping" when moved vertically (i.e. the image in the viewfinder skips when the camera is moved up and down). I also noticed there is a dent in the zoom ring on the lens, hopefully you can see it here:

Now, I'm wondering a few things. First, what's under this ring, and could this dent be related to the erratic behavior of the IS? It doesn't happen always just sometimes, and the IS still works. Second, is this something I should be worried about? And third, how much does it cost to send a lens in for repair?

Anyone else had this happen on an IS lens?

Thanks!
