Looks like I need to rent a good telephoto or long lens for my trip to Teton and Glacier.... Any suggestions. I've been thinking about canon 100-400L for my 20D and 30D. Will this be enough or should i go with a 500?

Go all the way. Get the 500mm. It's big and heavy though.
