My score is so low it should have been a 'Mono-tone' entry. ;)

Janine, you have commented on mine and I thank you for it, it's a nice comment but you have picked up on something I suspected might be considered a flaw to some people and to others it would be part of the making of the image, so please do not give up commenting if for no other reason than it is a great tool for YOU to learn from rather than those idiots (yes I do use the term deliberately in this instance) that cannot take a bit of criticsm on work they have displayed publically and feel the need to defend it aggressively. I try and remember to always put an IMO clause in my comments now to make it sound like I am not telling people what to do but rather how I might have done it myself.

Seriously though so many more people will be appreciative of your comments than will be mad at them, please don't let the minority put you off of using the best tool this site has to offer.

Just to add my own ... Most people appreciate some feedback to know why their entry is not doing as well as hoped. (I always get a kick out of a 6.1 average with a remark about "not doing too well today") Or in my case, I am playing "critique bingo", trying to match up the received critiques with the ones I predicted before voting started.

I spent quite a bit of time researching this Duotone Challenge, both the thread here (with tutorial) and about 5/6 other articles...I guess what took the wind out of my sail is that I will openly admit that I DO NOT KNOW ALL THERE IS ABOUT DUOTONES I was not prepared to receive a PM that said "you have no idea what you are talking about", cause I really do think I know a "little bit" about this (at least enough to be dangerous). I really think that many in this challenge do not understand that B&W is not duotone BECAUSE neither B/W are colors therefore they cannot be tones and from the tutorial and the photo journals that I read...they ALL said that after you convert to "Grayscale/B&W" then you must ADD tones thus creating "Duo/Split-tone", none of them stopped at the B&W stage...they all continued to process to add the tones.....If I see a photo in this challenge that slaps me in the face as one color and I don't see a balancing color/tone...to me it is single-tone...BLACK IS NOT A TONE...this comes from Color Class 101 mind you a few 100 years ago but I don't think that concept has changed....

In a nutshell, I will continue with the commenting, abet with my "armor" on...it just really hit me last night when I got 4 such PM's (the other 3 were very kind and really wanted more validation of my comments, which I have no problem with...sometimes I am not as clear as I could be and if you see ???? I am asking you to clarify) it was the 4th that really pulled the rug out from under me...So Yo_Spiff you might not be safe anymore...crawl a long ways under that rock...or at least you haven't let me know that I've hit your photo yet...I finished my voting last night now I have to go back and finish the commenting....thanks for letting me vent sorry if this doesn't belong here....oh, well

Janice - You may want to review the challenge description that was posted by SC specifically for this challenge. It states that b/w counts in this challenge. Maybe that is why people are getting cheesed up. I hope that helps Cheers!

Janine, I would just say be a little careful, the topic in the challenge is at fault here not the submitters of B&W images, you are being a little literal on the title from the comments in your last post and yet the challenge description clearly allows for B&W so you criticising someone on that would ruffle a few feathers no doubt:

Description: Your submission should only consist of two tones (black/white, sepia, etc).

That's most likely why someone got a little over defensive, IMO you have to take the Challenge topic, the challenge description and marry them together here, because they're so often contradictory of each other.

Still hanging onto that 6+?

Well, my score is not getting any better. It has topped out at about 5.4. :(

Janine did give me a nice comment, but mine is "one of those" that dared to actually pay attention to the challenge description. Perhaps that is why it is doing so poorly. (I must remember...from now on ignore the challenge description...ignore the challenge title...hell ignore the whole freakin challenge and I would be better off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

I only had a quick scan through so far but I cannot see a single image that is ignoring the challenge title / description - as I say only a quick scan through but they all look valid entries to me.

From my understanding (which could be wrong), in duotones, black is considered a color (white isn't). So if there's black in the photo, there should only be one other color to make it a duotone. I thought I saw a number of them that had more colors. Also, if a duotone is a halftone reproduction of an image using the superimposition of a contrasty black halftone over a one color halftone, are the photographs that use the color only in a small, limited area, really a duotone?

Arguing about what is and what isn't a Duotone is really not the point here, the description in the challenge clearly allows for a B&W image and that's the point worth noting really.

ETA: To stay on topic:

Score is 6+

ETA2: I should have made it clear that arguing about whether B&W constitutes a Duotone is pointless as the description allows for B&W - argh! forget it hahah it happens every challenge I have no idea why I even bother to respond to these threads anymore, everyone always has their own view on any given topic - I just wish they would keep it to themselves rather than rant here about it, that just breeds more ranting and then the scores suffer for it - Just IMO ofc ;)

Sorry to add to the argument, but I had to put my 2 cents in. If black and white is considered MONOchrome, then shouldn't black, white and some other color be considered a DUOtone? Being in the printer business, I never consider white a color. It is the absence of color. It is the screen or the paper.
06/17/2009 11:19:11 AM · #223
Yeah Yo_Spiff I totally agree but that is something to take up with Langdon not the people who have entered B&W images as under the description is clearly allowing for B&W in the DUOTones challenge... I don't even have a B&W entry and I am defending those that do LOL

Agreed. however the challenge description specifically allows black and white images for this challenge as meeting the challenge. So anyone who marks images down because they are black and white are trolls. Black and white (whether meeting the technical criteria for duotone or not) DOES meet the challenge in this case. If you have an issue with black and white being included, don't blame and punish the folks that entered them and call them mis-informed...send an email to Langdon and complain to him...he picks the challenges and descriptions!!!!

If you weren't across the "pond", I'd buy you a cold beer for that one! Well said.
