I sent an email to a national newspaper (with different editions for cities across Canada) last night, attaching these websized shots. I said with Canada Day coming up I thought they might make a good photo series. I'm hoping they get published in the print edition nationally.

I wasn't expecting a reply, as I've sent photos to them before and have been completely ignored. Lo & behold, 24 minutes later I get this reply, "very nice. just heading out for the weekend. Please remind me on monday and send a full rez image then for me to show around..."

So now I must choose an example that is most suitable on print for showing around to non-DPC, Canadian newspaper type people.

At DPC we're all so spoiled with the high quality, and amazing water drop shots done by Irenem and others, it's hard to remember that many other "regular" people have not been exposed to them. That makes the choice of which hi-rez shot to send him Monday difficult for me. I entered the detached one that looks like an apple in the latest Free Study only because it was my wife's favourite.

Any opinions/strategies on which to send as hi-rez ???

As a non-Canadian, I think this one screams Canada to me more than the others.

I lean towards the same one as Judi. The ONLY other candidate, IMO, is:

Reason: these show the flag to best advantage, and the theme here is "Canada Day"...

I'd do 1, 2 and 3.

3 is questionable.

1 is great because it's very irregular, but is still very visually interesting.

2 is probably the clearest option due to the obvious Canajin flag.

I still think #1 has a chance. I see a lot of pics with this type of composition on news sites.

You do these by hand or use a laser trigger? Seems to me that the drops are at a very standardized height.

Thanks Bear, that makes sense.

Eschelar, I did them by hand, but took many other shots, these just happen to be the 12 I picked. Maybe I subconsciously prefer that hight? I don't think any got higher than that in my photos, but there were some lower ones, even right down in the crater. I just kept shooting until my ziplock baggy of water ran empty. :-)

I went with the majority and sent a printfile of #2.

A reply of "Thanks, I'll show it around." but no other rely since Sunday.

I sent a note an hour ago asking "is there any interest?".

Just got the reply, "I’m interested – how much?"

Ahahaha, why is pricing such a hassle?

What's the word DPC? Of course, I don't know any details as to how many they want, or how they'd be used.

What's the word DPC?

no hassle. simple response: what do you normally pay?
either it's reasonable (you can use this calculator to get a ballpark number), or it's not.
if it's not, ask for more.
if they won't budge, decide if it's worth it to take what they're offering or to bag it.

good luck!

Uh oh, is that a bad thing?

so, did they cough it up?

He offered up $100, to which I replied that was "great, $100 each", and asked how many and which shots he'd like. He replied that he'd only seen the high-rez shot. I re-sent the original email with all the shots he'd originally seen. No answer, days pass. I send a hello, no answer.

His other replies to me were very fast, from his Blackberry. I doubt he goes on holiday without it, so odds are I'm off his radar. Oh well, no worries.

I've sent them to another paper moments ago. We'll see if that goes anywhere.

"Editor in Chief" wrote me back, he has forwarded them on to the "Visuals Editor".

Hopefully they will carry more weight after being forwarded from the top. ;-)
