Are there any Japanese anime fans on the site? I have watched a few over the last year, and despite the fact that I don't fit the normal fan profile actually rather enjoyed them...

So far I have watched Howl's Moving Castle, Grave of the Fire Flies, and Spirited Away from Studio Ghibli, with G of the FF being my favourite; Death Note; Code Geass; Noein; Last Exile, and I am currently watching Full Metal Alchemist. Of the series, Death Note and Last Exile have been my favourites, but I have enjoyed the others too.

So, the purpose of my post - does anyone have any recommendations for what to watch once I have finished Full Metal Alchemist?

I don't know your position on the whole sub vs. dub "thing," but if you're into dubs, I voiced Chief Amano in Miami Guns (AN Entertainment).

It's a funny series, and I suppose even the sub is funny, but I'm partial to the dub, since I know 95% of the voice actors in it. ;) Including my wife, by the way, who voiced the dub for the lead character -- Yao.

It's been described as "You're Under Arrest" and "Excel Saga" meets "Miami Vice." Not being much of an anime fan myself, I don't know how accurate that is, but I know it was a really fun series to work on!

I'm not big on anime, but I did enjoy the Ghost in the Shell stuff, both Stand Alone Complex and the movie. Of course, Akira is a classic movie as well. I sorta remember liking Princess Mononoke too.

I'm not an anime fan--but I really liked spirited away.

Thanks - I shall definitely give Bebop Cowboy a try. Cdrice, if the dub is good I'll use it, if not I watch with subtitles - I'll keep a look out for Miami Guns - that's a pretty cool job you have! Akira, I have heard of, but not seen - another to add to the list.

Wendy. if you like Spirited Away I am pretty certain you would like Grave of the Fire Flies; just make sure you have a hanky to hand.

Any other recommendations, any one?

Good to know--thanks! My daughter is 14 and draws anime--spirited away is her favorite movie. But we haven't really watched any others...

I'm a big fan of Japanese animation and of Studio Ghibli, the Hayao Miyazaki movies especially. They produce atypical anime (compared to the TV stuff, for example). It's hard to top Spirited Away but I'd recommend Princess Mononoke, which is long but has a good message and some exciting battle sequences. Kiki's Delivery Service is a girls coming of age story -- it's about a young witch and it is excellent. Whisper of the Heart also features a teen girl though in a more contemporary, realistic story (I think it's unfairly neglected). My Neighbor Totoro is aimed for a younger set but is truly one of the sweetest movies I've ever seen.

These films appreciate silence, nature, etc., and may be too "slow" for viewers used to over-stimulation. Boys might prefer Lupin/Castle of Cagliostro, which is early Miyazaki -- more "cartoon" like -- but a good adventure story. Castle in the Clouds is also fun and features a boy hero and lots of action.

Personally, I couldn't get into Nausicaä or Porco Rosso, and Grave of the Fireflies (many people's favorite) became far too maudlin for my taste.

Of course, anime covers a wide gamut of styles, from kids fare to hardcore and everything in between. Others I liked are Akira, Ghost in the Shell (1 & 2), Jin-Roh... To a much lesser extent Metropolis, Blood, Vampire Hunter D, the Patlabor mech movies, and Cowboy Bebop. I did not like Steamboy (about an hour too long), The Cat Returns, Perfect Blue (not for kids, btw) and I'm sure many others I've forgotten.

I'll also put in a plug for some non-Japanese animation. Try The Iron Giant and the hyper-real looking Final Fantasy: Spirits Within.

I used to watch much more of this then I do now. I just don't know where to find good stuff. Adult Swim opened my eyes to a lot, and one day I will sit and watch all 160+ eps of inuyasha I have on dvd haha.

Full Metal Alchemist is also one of the most moving series Ive ever seen, live action or anime.

another atypical fan here. Love love love Cowboy Bebop (btw the dubbing is A LOT better than the other older animes), Wolf's Rain was good not to mention beautiful, just finished Code Geass and thought that was amazingly tactical. Seen Fullmetal Alchemist and thought that while it is very cutesy looking, it has some deep themes and a good ending, the movie was so-so. Samurai Champloo is also a lot of fun. Bleach is good if you are in for a long ride, and I would take Bleach over Inuyasha any day for a longer story. I watched Eureka 7 and was not a fan, but I know a lot of people liked it; it was just too cotton candy for me. Oh, Trigun is an oldie but a goodie. Blood + was ok, but kinda emo at times and the end was kinda meh. Is that enough for you? ;)

1. Sub
2. Miyazaki is so amazing, such great attention to details
3. I haven't watched it yet, but my boyfriend (who is much more into the anime tv scene than I am, I'm more of a film person) is watching and loving Yu Yu Hakusho: it's about a spirit detective that goes around protecting Earth from demons. Also, he recommends Death Note. Apparently, it's award-winning and looks promising. He also says that both of Vampire Hunter D movies are good to see if you haven't yet.

I guess you haven't seen °Ponyo Under the Sea Cliff°, last year's release from Studio Ghibli. Very impressive.
The DVD is coming out here in Japan next month, so I may get it.
The kids at school think it's funny when I try to sing the theme song (I always deliberately get the words wrong ;-Þ)

p.s. definitely subtitles, for live action aw well.
