I am probably like most of the folks who try to comment on a good bulk of the pictures...I'm going rather slow this challenge (still tired from rust and abstract, I guess). I have voted on all, but I have only commented on about 90 or so...but I will get to all of them by this weekend. I, again, like most people, have a family, a career, and a life (of some sort, I suppose), and occasionally go out to take a picture or two. I promise that you aren't being ignored on purpose...it just takes a while! :o)

Anyone else getting particularly hammered today in Opposites? I had just made it back to 5 yesterday, and I was beginning to feel relief that at least it would be a 5 ;)
I've seen at least 8 threes go by today! Tough crowd.

I have been tied to my desk so I set up a spread sheet and check in on my scores pretty often, and today is runs so about every tenth score is a one or two slamming a decent shot that is currently scoring a six and everytime it tries to rise somebody says ONE and .... sigh.
24 comments though a new record, sadly no one who has scored it low has dained to comment.

Oh yeah...I was actually above a 5 yesterday morning (or maybe the night before...it all runs together) and now I've been at a 4.92 all day. The most bizarre thing is that 99% of the comments I have received have been very positive...you said it when you said "TOUGH CROWD!" I've been going back through and tweaking my scores for Opposites, as I tend to do on all the challenges, and find the scores ooching up instead of down. I was in kind of a shock mode the first run through, but now I have become more used to the ones that shocked me and I can be more free with my ratings and feel OK about it. I did still have a couple of 1s and 2s, but not a whole lot below 4. Good luck everyone!!!! :o)

| I am new to the dpchallenge and i must say i don't understand the crazy scores i seem to be getting.I know i don't have the best photograph, but how can you give a picture a 1 or even a 2 if it is in focus and meets the challenge? I have gone to being so close to having a 6 to now hoverivg in the high 4s |

Well it's not just the technical aspect, being in focus and meeting the challenge is not enough, it has to be pleasing to the voters. If it was just being in focus and meeting the challenge then most people would get 10. Although lately a lot of submissions don't even come close to being technically adequate.

I, too, have a lot of comments. My score, also, is pretty much what I expected. Remember people, anything above 5.0 is not bad...it's very difficult to get 6.0 or better and usually means you'll be in the top 50 or less. |

| Bizarre!!! I just checked my score on the Opposite Challenge. I am trying to figure out how one can go from hovering around a 6 with about 185 votes one day to having a 5.6 after 218 votes. And here is the kicker! There are 20 comments and only one could be interpretted as being negative... Unbelievable!! |

The answer is... it's possible but far fetched. If you had an average of 6.000 at 185 votes, and dropped to 5.600 at 218 votes, you would need to have scored an average of 0.29 in between.
For this to happen, pretty much everyone would have had to vote you a "1", and over twice as many others would have had to vote you down one from a previously given vote.

| Kirbic, thanks for this computation... do you suppose this is what happened? Is this proof enough for us to realize that others are going back and lowering their intial scores. Not that there is anything against this. But, you have to wonder what is the motivation. Do people realize that their own voting on other pictures averages out other pictures? All of the pictures you vote on are scored against each other using your own standards of voting. Therefore, it is not necessary to vote particularly low overall. I don't mean to sound like I am whining but I can't understand how an entry can have such a drop over so few votes and mostly positive comments! |

I always feel sort of strange voting because.. I tend to vote really high. I don't really know all about focus and aperture and depth of field and lighting and rules of thirds and all of those buzz words that you hear all the time. I tend to give 6's and 7's as my average, 8's and 9's for great photos, and 10's for ones that blow me away. And then if there are some that I feel just really aren't very good photographs, I give them 4's or 5's. I don't think I get much lower than that. I hate to be overly critical or analytical, and just let things be great for what they are.
And then I see how technical other people vote.. how low the scores are. When I see that our first place pictures are only reaching 6's and 7's most of the time.. what's that saying? Not that they should all be perfect 10's but.. I don't know. I'm rambling.
There's my two cents, anyway. |

You know what's funny, Lindsay...I am a teacher too, and I have found myself on occasion doing the teacher thing. You know, finding the best attributes in the worst picture (or assignment) and being positive, encouraging, looking for potential rather than finished product...I wonder if all teachers do that!!! I forget that this isn't my classroom and I can finally be the mean teacher (that is, if I wanted to be). :o) LOL

hehehe... that may very well be why! I teach a 1st and 2nd grade combination class.. and especially with the little guys, you have to be really encouraging, and try to decipher what they meant by their writing even if the words are all spelled wrong and the handwriting's not very neat. I do the same when voting.. look for what the person was trying to achieve, and what they did well.
And a lot of the time, I think to myself, "Who am I to be critical of their work?" I'm not an expert on any aspect of photography. And even if I were, I'm not the ultimate judge on what constitutes art.
Ah well. I guess it all balances out in the end, with all of the low votes that others give! |

Yah I have a tough time hammering a shot if it's in fcus and at least reasonably composed. BUt I guess scores are like in school. You are judged on how you did relative to everyone else. In the end though I like the harsher criticism, if ppl tell me what I'm doing wrong. |

call me harsh, but i found the thing that caused me to give lower scores (and i admit, i have not made comments yet though i usually do comment on about 20-30% of the photos) is the lack of meeting challenge. there were a lot of "go together/don't go together" shots but very few "opposite" shots. a cat is not the opposite of a dog.

Well, I'd be curious when the scoring is over to see if you saw my opposite. It's quite different than anything else here. It involves colors, it's blatent, and yet many are missing it. It really depends on your mindset, like one of those illusion games.
I am still hoping that when people go to do last minute checks and they stare at the thumbnails they rated low, they might see something they didn't realize when first looking at it! I am still taking a beating. I have been watching the scores and I have a bunch of 3's and a fair number of 2's (and it's in focus and well composed--I am getting beat on for the challenge factor).
I think after the challenge I'll post it and see if I can get the 3 scorers and below to go back and have another look: I think it would be fun for them to go back and when told what it is, see if they slap there heads! (Ok, I won't be able to see that.) LOL |
