in this article which Steve found, they mentioned that Cartier-Bresson was born as a "real photographer" in 1932 when he bought his Leica in Marseille. Since I am in Marseille right now, I am so tempted to go buy a Leica here somewhere :)

Do it! Do it! I would like to as well at some point... Also, from what I understand it is a good investment... Our DSLRs won't be worth nearly as much today as compared to a few years down the line... but time doesn't depreciate a Leica's value.. Also, I reckon a Leica suits you ; )

Anyway...that being said I'm going to fiddle with my new plastic toy now : (

Nah, I cannot go back to stone axes, bows and arrows, and film cameras, too late :). I could perhaps buy a Leica for its sentimental value, but even then, for me personally Zenit-E holds more sentimental value since it was my first film camera (and I actually have it already) :).

So get a digital Leica? :-)

What Melethia said. zeuszen just got one - the pana LC3 equivalent. (I live vicariously through these purchases).

I actually started looking for that Panasonic LX3 or whatever it is. Apparently they don't actually exist for sale at the moment. I have a few more places to check locally. Don't know why I want one, but I do. :-)

This is with LX3 I need to add it to my cameras and go back and give the right camera info on some of my pics...

I am quite happy with it.

I'm on the "notify me if you get some" list at B&H. A couple of fly-by-nights claim they have it but I won't bother with those. I may look locally again tomorrow - didn't even see a space on a shelf for one today when I went looking.

I already have my "digital Leica", it's Ricoh GX100 (now replaced by GX200 I believe). I wonder why nobody is looking at it (essentially I am the only proud owner of it on DPC)? It is great for casual shooting as well as for street photography: all manual controls, wide-angle 24-72mm lens, RAW format, metal body, and fits my pocket. A lot of "street" folks over at Flickr are swearing by it.

Maybe I shall take a look at that one. My second SLR was a Ricoh and I wore that thing out, although that was long, long ago in a place far, far away. It eventually developed a light leak and had to be put down, poor thing. But it was a sweet camera. Not sure I want to compete for the page, though, Lev. :-) I think I'll just let you own it.

My brother (Canon EOS-20D) recently bought the Ricoh GX200; almost wish he'd shut up about it. My own film slr is a Ricoh, alas idling away in perfect condition.

Hello from a Noob.

This is my first attempt at any forum posting... ever. I appreciate in advance any critique or suggestions as to what I did improperly (ie. posting to forum w/out first doing something else, linking incorrectly, picture inappropriateness, etc). I'm as noob as it gets when it comes to photography and hope to learn as much as possible. I find the forums are hard to navigate via discussions because there is a lot of reference to terms I am unfamiliar with (mostly abbreviations of what I assume to be well known terms throughout this forum). I've perused the FAQ's and tutorials prior to this post so I hope I have kept it polite! I ask the same. :) Thank you and I look forward to your feedback.

Here goes!

On a recent visit to New York I was waiting in a VERY long line to get on the ferry to the Statue of Liberty. Lots of vendor tables in view and I'm playing with a newly purchases G10 Canon. I started to have fun with the color picker portion of the camera and was getting a kick out of the pop of color from the stands (otherwise visually a jumble). This women and her child walk up and I end up catching what I consider an interesting moment. I'd love to hear comments.

I'm new to photography in general. The passion is there, the "having a clue" is not. :) Be warned if you peruse my photobucket account, you will find many camera phone uploads from work (I'm a pet groomer) and lots of really (what the heck is she taking a picture of?) weird shots as I learn the settings on my camera and take the 22nd picture of the ceiling of the JAX airport. I look forward to making my great shot ratio go from something like 1/100 to 1/5 one day.

JShippee

P.S. I discovered there is a sign up thread as well as a photo thread after I found this. Still a bit confusing making my way around this site.

My new toy is similar -- great manual controls, metal body, and pocketable. And I too am the only proud owner here. It's the Sigma DP2. it has a fixed 41mm eq lens, but the Foveon sensor is roughly the size of Canon/Nikon's APS-C and captures full RGB data at every photosite (no Bayer filter, demosaicing). The image quality is amazing -- beats the pants off anything my DSLR can do. I'll post more shots later, but to give you an idea, here's a shot I took of a back alley followed by a 100% crop.

Ah, fabulous, Iraklis! A Holga (or some cheap lomo machine) is on my list of things to do this summer. I am so itching to get into film. I can't wait to see what you do with it...

I've just gone about as lo-fi as you can go and made a pinhole camera... : )

It's a challenge getting people in the shot with a 4 second exposure! : )

Hi Jessie, and welcome to the madness that is DPC! When you have questions, ask away - folks will answer you. Some may be smart-mouthed about it, but that's part of the madness. In most cases, though, you'll get lots of help and advice.

You may want to consider getting a membership here for the outrageous sum of $25 per year. What that gets you (among other things) is a portfolio here where you can post pictures and get comments on them. We can see the one you linked, and that's fine too, but you'll tend to get more feedback if you post pictures here (some of us are kinda lazy...).

You've got a great start - playing with the camera, finding what it can do, and most importantly, keeping your eyes open to what's out there!

Hey Jessica, welcome to DPC! I must note that I wish I had a great shot ratio 1/100. I think 1/5 is absolutely impossible. I think it was Ansel Adams who once said that if he had 10 great shots in one year, it was a good year. Keep in mind that as you develop your skills, your notion of a "great shot" will also evolve :)
