Welcome to the Serious Street Photography side challenge (alternate title: Street Photography For The Hopelessly Insecure).

Let's keep the emphasis on people. Post and comment as you can. Have fun. And don't take any of this too seriously.

Not the inaugural shot I originally planned on for the side challenge. I'll explain later.

I will admit I deliberated a lot about putting this up here. I'm still not sure how my version of street photography fits in with the incredibly cool urban b/w which I couldn't possibly get..

This was my first day attempting true street photography. There is a certain degree of exhilaration trying to capture candid moments only several feet from the subjects.

Same question you asked of my entry in the street photography challenge. A good question, actually, but often tough one to answer in a photo.

Here's my entry from that challenge, one of my rare efforts at this genre, and one that came in only mediocre.
' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/938/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_733802.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/938/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_733802.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

I think my shot was ok, but what the comment from Pawdrix was referring to is there is no message or story conveyed by the shot. The woman is sitting on the bench, but the shot conveys nothing about what is going on, nor anything about her personality. In other words, the viewer is left wondering why they are looking at it. In actual fact, this was at the Japanese gardens, and she was simply joying a pleasant morning by the Koi pond. The photo does not convey that however. If I had perhaps caught her with a relaxed pose and a smile, that may have conveyed the mood better. I agree that my entry conveys nothing.

He posted this comment on many images in the last side challenge which resulted in quite a lot of good discussion in the forum. I added the link so people can read it. I know what Pawdrix means by it, but I'm sure a few of the newer street shooters are a bit unsure.

I left my concept of why in my image details when I posted but it does not seem to have come across photographically (except to me of course!).

It's an important question and goal.

And for the newer street shooters (and some of us older ones as well), it's good to consider Steve's question, but also realize that we all can't get the decisive moment all the time! Get the camera and yourself out there, see what you can see. Share with us what you will and hopefully we can all learn from it. Sometimes something will strike a chord with me but not with someone else - it's all subjective, and that's a good thing.

I haven't shot for this side challenge yet but here are a couple from last month that fall into the "I like 'em, but they may not meet the criteria" category:

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/30000-34999/30982/120/790322.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/30000-34999/30982/120/790322.jpg', '/') + 1) . ' ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/30000-34999/30982/120/790327.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/30000-34999/30982/120/790327.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

The first one I like for the symbolism of folks who pass by each other every day and don't really notice. Also shows that quite often my street photography is seriously lacking in technical perfection, and that's fine by me. The second one I really like the atmosphere, and that there is a lone businessman, who has simply been standing there, reading his paper, waiting for a train. Something I'm sure he does every evening. Simple. Not profound.

Here we all are walking down the street, metaphorically speaking and I shout "stop". The whole crowd comes to a halt and I slowly point and say in a whispered voice, "check that out..."

I assume you would all hope I stopped you for a good reason and pointed out something cool, unusual or of some minute interest. Now, if I did that every thirty steps or in the middle of each block and really had nothing of interest to show you...you might eventually ask after the third or fourth time..."why is he showing me person/scene..."

So the question or challenge I propose is not necessarily about "the decisive moment" (though it can be) BUT any moment at all and more specifically some energy that's special, be it visual or physically dynamic and more directly, relating to the street (or a dynamic that a street specifically possesses).

So, for example, if someone stops me in my tracks and points at a woman simply, standing by a phone booth (average look, average dress etc.) doing nothing, I'll always wonder why that person (photographer) wanted me to look at her, specially amongst the hundreds of other people standing by the hundreds of other phone booths. What are they connecting me with?

It's a fair question...

ETA: Deb-Both those shots you posted have tremendous energy, especially the guy at the train station.

Yup. It's not easy as I am finding out. Went out today for an attempt and all I got was some sheep! Watching and learning and looking for some energy... (With people to boot!)

ESPECIALLY the guy at the train station, trapped as he is in the electrical grid.... wonderful shot.

It is a fair question. WAYSMTP for short. At first I was put off by it, but (and not to blow anymore sunshine Steve's way) it might be one of the most "helpful" comments I've gotten around here. Not that I've turned into any HCB since then, but I like to think I'm putting more thought into my shots these days and especially the ones I choose to share.

Also, and I didn't explicitly state it, but that was my motivation for labeing the side challenge as "serious." When you get a flood of (no pun intended) pedestrian street shots (people sleeping, reading, texting -- no energy, no magic, no irony) then people lose interest, stop commenting, stop posting, stop visiting, and the whole thing crumbles. That kind of happened with the last one. So it wasn't meant to sound elitist or exclusive (sorry if it did); it was just meant to encourage folks to really work hard to get some good shots.
