I downloaded qtpfsgui and gimp 2 so I could learn to make HDR photos, but am having such a hard time. I think there's something I'm just not understanding. A couple questions just to start with, because they could be my main problems. 1) Do you HAVE to be working with RAW files? Because I can't with my camera, and frankly have no idea what the hell they even are. 2) Do the variations of exposures have to be original photos? That seems unclear, but I mean can I take one original photo and use an editor to vary the exposures, or must I take multiple photos with my camera on different settings to create different exposures?
I know this is getting lengthy, but whenever I do what everyone says to do with these programs, I make the high exposure layer and everything dark turns grey and grainy. Then when I add it to the background layer or something (which is my made up method of doing this), sure the brights look fine but all the darks in the photo looks ridiculous. I never ever get the desired effect of HDR photos.
In conclusion, help me.
Thanks!

1) No, you should not need to use RAW files, thought RAW does give more to work with. I have not used that program, so it is possible it may have a limitation. I have done it with Tiff's andf JPEG's, in Photomatix.

2)No, you should be able to use separate adjustments of the same image. Some software needs to be tricked into taking them, as it may look at the exif data and see the same exposure values for all of them in the exif.

Again, I am not sure how that program handles it, but generally speaking, that should work. Though I have not used it, I think I may have that program installed at home and I can give it a try this evening if needed.
