i normally create an adjustment layer from the layers menu on the right side of photoshop cs4. i then use the eraser brush to undo some of the changes ive made.
this time i want to undo 90% of my curves adjustment layer. in other words i want to only apply curves to a small part of the image. is there a way to do this? (maybe some type of inverted layer?)

Use a black brush and paint on the adjustment layer. This creates a mask and wherever you paint, the adjustment does not apply. Works in CS3, don't know about CS4. You can change the opacity level of the brush for how much or how little of the adjustment you want to show through.

| Check the Tutorials (under the Learn menu) for Layer Masks -- there are two or three different examples of how to do this. |

| One quick way would be to create the adjustment layer and make the adjustment globally, then use the paint bucket to paint the entire layer mask black, then finally use the brush tool to paint back in white on the layer mask to "paint in" the adjustment in the areas desired. |

I've just checked this in PS Elements 3 and it certainly works there. Very useful information on something I wouldn't have even thought to ask. Thanks.
