How long has it been for you now since you gave up?

I quit on April 1, which makes it 60 days without a smoke. The difference is like night and day. Keeping very busy helps. One thing I found to battle those after dinner cravings is to hand wash your dishes, very slowly with lots of hot soapy water.

Btw, one important thing if you are used to smoking in your house or in your car. You'll need to have a smell termination campaign :) I have a house office, which I used two cans of Air Fresheners, there are few that specially made to mask and kill the cigarettes smell, for few days I could still smell them .. but after that the smell is totally gone. The car took two weeks to give it stinking smell, but eventually it did. It used to give me a nervous breakdown whenever I smelled the smoke in it. Just thought to give you some heads up :) Just in case ..

Water .. Breatheeeeeeeeeeee .. I am proud of you :)

BAMartin: I remember those dreams from my previous attempt :)

Thanks Ameed :-)
Actually I WANT to smell the smoke, in my car, on my clothes - I really want to smell what other people smelt as a reminder of how gross it was. Possibly that will change, but I never did like the smell of smoke, so I'm not going to crave it, especially if its all stale in the car. Eventually I will clean everything and make it fresh, but for now the reminder will be good, once I start identifying it, lol.

I have one problem though - last night I spied a full unopened packet of cigarettes that I thought I'd lost a couple of weeks ago. Its under my printer stand. I don't know what to do with it - I can't actually bring myself to go near it, if i hold it the temptation may come, but its sitting there staring at me with little beady eyes, lol. Maybe I'll just leave it there so it gives me something to fight and yell at, instead of anyone else, lol.

The patches irritation feeling is very normal, it is part of the side effects. But Having only 16 hours patch, you might be missing some dreams :) It is the only wonderful memory out of this challenging experience .. ask any one who did this successfully .. and you will see this smile on their face while they are saying .. ohh I remember those dreams :)

Sending you some good Vibes your way :)

Thats very dangerous, be sure you will experience one of those moments that will feel like collapsing, having cigarettes close by really wont help. I have two of those moments, and honestly thinking if I had cigarettes around me I would've smoked. One of my best tactics to get over it, is to stay away from it in the first few days ..

Very best wishes to all of you who are quitting smoking. It is not easy at all but is most rewarding. Besides loosing a child it is the worst thing I have suffered through.
I don't believe five minutes, while awake, went by without my thinking about smoking, for about six months. Just don't give in. You have already suffered the hardest part.
October 22 will make it twenty four years....best thing I ever did for myself.

Good Luck, get rid of any temptations still around and remember, you can't have just one puff.

Well,I'm not at home and won't be until late on Wednesday night. I'm in Toronto with our youngest son Isaac while he's filming and when we went into the Craft services truck this morning she had (as she always does) the most beautiful pastries and treats. She almost passed out when I didn't take one and was quick to ask if there was a problem with her food. I told her that I had finally made a choice to profoundly change the way I'm eating and that her pastries looked to good to eat. She smiled and I explained to her about our site and how some of us are supporting each other with this life changing effort to loose weight and that most of the others were not only trying to lose weight but they were quitting smoking at the same time. I've got it easy i told her because I only have lose wight, I couldn't imagine doing both.

I have to tell you that she was thrilled to death with having something to do that would be outside the box for her style of catering. She offered to make me all kinds of things (special food things) just for me in an effort to help me out because she said that eating off her craft truck isn't always the most healthy and she set about preparing me healthy delights all day and said that she would have lots more for me tomorrow and for the entire next year of filming, what a great lady. She also told me that she would let her staff know and when she wasn't there it would not effect me because she would leave them a list of the things I like because she would keep track of the things she makes and witch ones I like.

How's that for support for when I'm away from home, and I'm only the talents father not even an actor in this series. What luck to have someone who even gives a darn. I told her that she didn't have to do this and that I would be happy to just try and do healthy choices from what she had on hand each day. She said "Don't be silly, I love your son and the two of you are always so kind to me and you never demand like everyone else and you treat me like I really matter to you and like I'm a real person. You guys always clean up after yourselves and ask me if there's anything I need when your going somewhere. Some of the others do it from time to time and the only others that do it all the time is your wife and your other son so this is the least that I can do for how well you treat me."

I told her how thrilled I was for her support and how wonderful we think she is. She already keeps special foods for our sons and my wife on hand and fresh every day because of allergies to wheat and dairy and a whole host of other things and she gives us what's left over at the end of every shoot cycle. She's fantastic :)

Well sorry for the long post but I just so happy to not to have to worry about food choices while we're away from home filming I wanted to share.

I'm really ready for this and my wife has gone through the house and purged all the tempting items form our house while we're away so that when we get back I can continue in my efforts.

Lets kick this everyone, together we can do this and make a difference in our lives. With the support of each other I'm sure we'll all succeed.

MAX!

Edit spelling :) I think I got all the errors.

Ameed, I know that I'm big but I think you need to change my BMI. I'm pretty sure that it should be 36.6 according to your chart, not 48.2 as you have posted. Thank you :)

Hey guys,
I've been away from DPC for a couple of weeks.. I logged on today and this was the first thread I noticed. Its a strange coincidence because I've been planning my "get back on track" routine for a while. I made the decision to begin the atkins diet, start an excersize routine and quit smoking as of June 1st prior to seeing this thread. Over the next six month I am going to begin a complete overhaul of my life. I got out of a bad long term relationship a year ago and things have slipped completely down hill since. I lost my job.. moved back home with my faimly.. put on a ton of weight.. smoked like a chimney.. got into debt.. etc. etc. I've spent way too much time being depressed and beating myself up about it.. It's time to clear the air and move on to a better happier healthier lifestyle. Logging in and tracking my progress here would be a great help and motivation to me. I always turn to dpc as a source of inspiration. The community here is absolutely increadible. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's progress. My stats bellow might be a little shocking.. I have a long way to go.. but every journey has to start somewhere.. Mine starts here.

Height 5'2"
Weight 266
Target 200 (after 6 months)
Long Term Goal: 130 (18 months)
BMI: 48.6
Targer BMI in 6 months: 36.6
Smoke free days: 183 (6 months)
Money I will save: $1095 (1 pack a day at $6)

I should just throw them out, but... grrrr!

Its 5pm on day one. Most of the day was pretty good, but there were two really really bad periods of time - around noon - 2pm, and now. Pretty tough going, but I will not give in. I didn't eat all day because I was too afraid that I'd set up a trigger (i know, stupid, but if I were intelligent I wouldn't have been smoking in the first place would I). Trouble is, when I did finally have something to eat about half an hour ago, it brought on the most awful cravings, real smoking cravings. The ones in the middle of the day were different, I didn't actually want to smoke, I just felt agitated, had intense heat around the back of my neck, was almost manic in my movements and energy levels, and had a few spells of almost not being able to breathe. The cravings tonight are nasty, its the time of day I really like to have a glass of wine and a cigarette before I start cooking dinner. Hopefully that will go soon!

Anyway my friends, I was a packet a day smoker yesterday, and today I can honestly say there were only 2 major times that I could say were bad. I saw the middle of the day craving as a physical response to the removal of the addictive substance (although I am wearing a patch, but it doesn't give as much as the cigarettes do). Tonight I see this period as my favourite time of day for smoking, and I just have to get over that.
Good luck to whoever is waking to no cigarettes in the morning, fasten your seatbelt and enjoy the ride, lol. We can all cope with the crap you have to go through, there's far worse in life than this. Its just the psychological commitment to quitting for good that has to be worked on through those 2 nasty patches.

PS Ameed, you were SO right about the breathing - at one stage when I was at my worst today, I realised I wasn't breathing at all, I was so tense! As soon as I remembered what you had said, and breathed, it did improve things. Thanks Ameed :-)

Good morning all. I would like to start by saying.I wish each and every one of you the very best and I know we can do it.

We're off to set in five and I hope I can find a wireless network somewhere out there for the day.

All the best to you and yours.

In 20 minutes it will be 23 hours smoke free. I feel like crap and I'm going to bed. But I'm a tentatively proud of myself for getting this far. And if that little nicotine man in my head thinks he's going to torture me like this again tomorrow, I'll have to punch his daylights out, lol.

I started a little early yesterday cause I ran out of smokes at 7pm sunday night. Anyhow, yesterday was easy, but this morning is proving to be a challenge. The craving is BAD.. and half my brain says, just stop by the store on the way to work and grab a mini cigar or something, the other half says NO NO NO NO.

I am not going to smoke. I am sticking it out, all the way.

There is a great quit meter available, for free if you wish, at

//www.silkquit.org/stop-smoking/quit-meter.aspx

During my early struggles with the quit, I found it to be positive feedback to check it often, to see what progress I'd made. How many not smoked, how much time without, how much money saved, etc. You might find it helpful, too.

Good luck.

Well done all those giving up during this challenge!

I cannot offer you any solid advice because it was so long ago that I managed to do it but what I can say is it's such an incredible feeling once you actually get your life back that it's worth the struggle!

My struggle is now with my weight so today I made a point of getting out in the front garden and I did some brick laying and repointed some of the paving slabs (my wife has been waiting for her front garden to be completed for 12 years - finally the end is in sight and by the end of this week I plan to have the whole thing complete) that was my exercise for today, tomorrow I will be going for a bike ride (I have to be careful as I have a very weak lower back due to a motorbike accident some years ago and I get no warning that I have done too much, when it goes that's it I'm immobilised for weeks).

Keep up the great work everyone I am rooting for each and everyone of you!

so far so good.. I've been keeping myself occupied any time my mind has wandered to cigarettes.. I'm not really craving carbs or bad food. Staying busy really helps.. I went for an hour walk with each of my dogs today.. when I got back I had such a crazy endorphin high.. It felt increadible.. but instead of relaxing or letting my mind wander off for too long I went on a cleaning frenzy.. Finally cleaned out my jeep... and did a bunch of laundry.. I'm going to run to the car wash and take a drive with the top down and my camera on the passenger seat..

I'm really proud of everyone who's spending their first day with a breath of fresh air instead of a stinky nasty cigarette.. Step outside and take a few deep breaths every once in a while..fill your lungs to capacity and listen to the breath escape slowly.. the calming effect is reminicent of smoking.. only without the crappy smell... when the cravings gets really bad switch whatever you're doing at the moment.. shifting focus really works.

Guys, things to expect in day 1, please note that these symptoms might vary from a person to another.

Things to expect:
1- Headache. Like Ice hand squeezing your brain.
2- Some hot/cold sensation going through your body.
3- Chest pain '' don't misinterpret this as unhealthy sign '' it is your body crying from craving.

Things to know:
1- Headache will go away, lots of water will help.
2- The ho/cold sensation will go, it is your brain not used to the poisoning nicotine in it. It will recover.
3- The chest pain is due to the craving, it will go away, you will breath better and will be better person VERY SOON.

Things to do:
1- Drink lots of water and breath.
2- Get busy, don't give your self a chance to think about your craving.
3- Don't hang out around temptation, stay in healthy environment and away from smokers.
4- Todays goal is to stay smoke free, one step at the time .. one day at the time ..

YOU ALL CAN DO IT.

Day 2. Woke in a terrible mood after not much sleep. The puppy had shat all over the house, which didn't help. I thought her toilet training had improved but of course she chose today to regress. My children decided to be lazy and difficult too. So I lost it, then burst into tears and ended up cuddling them and asking them to please be nice for just one or two days. Then I let my son find that unopened packet of smokes under the printer table, and asked him to destroy them. He enjoyed that, lol.
Still not happy, but going for a walk.
