So.
I was thinking this might be fun for practice, and trying some different things out.
A side challenge where all the images submitted are done with your camera set on the highest ISO.

I'm not usually a fan of rules in side challenges, but I was thinking doing this one without any noise reduction software. I guess if you really want to push your limits on lighting, but still create smooth images, it would be up to you.

Lets see who can utilize this feature to shoot in interesting low light situations, or fast shutter speeds, or creating images that utilize the grainy look.

OK! There's Interest!

I'm totally about posting when you can. If you can post thirty go ahead... if you post one, jump in. Try to comment when you can--that's my kind of side challenge!

This sounds really interesting - I'd love to give this a go; though I am away for the first week.

that sounds great!

It would be nice to post somewhere where the grainy look was expected/accepted -- I get plenty of grain/noise even with moderate ISO settings -- but I can never keep up with these monthly things.

Yay, I want to be in!

I always fail about the middle of the second week, but I'd still like to give this a go! Could be really interesting...

Were you looking for daily/weekly/when you can submissions?
05/19/2009 03:16:34 PM · #11
Heck I do some of my best work in the dark..........even with the camera. As long as its not a daily thing due to my schedule I'd be in.

Not even close ... ;-)

Maybe we should have a "sporadic poster" side challenge -- no more than two submissions/month. ;-)

Like the idea - practically never use higher/highest ISO, so this would be a learning for me. Also I do very little in the way of noise reduction anyway. Of course June in my part of the world is not really a time of high ISO, so this makes it more interesting.

sweet idea, put me down! i love shooting grainy stuff, and it just so happens that i put a kodak tmax 3200iso in my film camera 3 days ago :) hope that counts, too...

Count me in, sounds like a good learning experience.......

I'm thinking about this. The S3 is an older DSLR, so it does not handle high iso very well re noise. It may get me to shoot some that way and make me start thinking about how to utilize high iso when the situation is right.
Not in yet, but thinking about it.

I'd like to take part in this.

My question is this...........do you use the highest Native ISO possible or the highest software generated ISO available?

my 1DsMKII has a 1600ISO native and my 1DMKIII has 3200ISO native. Both also have one extra stop pushed by software. They also both have ISO 50 available through the same method. Which do we use?

dude, don't be splitting hairs. i think as long as there's any noticible noise or artefacts in your final photo it should be ok, so in your case you should be dq'ed from the start because your cameras handle noise too damn well...;)
seriously though i'm looking forward to see some 1dsmkII low light samples on high iso's as i'm kind of in the market to getting this camera...
i'll be shooting iso 1600-3200 on my p&s fuji, iso 1600 on my dslr (highest setting) and perhaps some more iso 3200 film on both of my analog slr's.

The 1DsMKII does surprisingly well at 1600ISO, I don't think I've ever shot it at 3200, but I'm going to use the highest ISO that is native on both and turn in camera noise reduction off(if it isn't already)

Sounds fun, but at this time of year (18 hours + daylight), unless I find a cave to shoot in, it's not really something for me. Will watch with interest though.
