I just found an interesting article on slashdot:- Computers With Opinions On Visual Aesthetics about Acquine, a computer based photo rating system.

It reckons my current entry in Motivational poster is 78.4, which is much better than the 5.29 I'm currently getting, so how about we let the computer do the voting - no more trolls at least!

edit: if some kind person could correct the spelling mistake in the thread title I'd be obliged.

This one, which has all good comments, gets an abysmal 25.4 :-)

This one, on the other hand (a ribbon winner) gets a very nice 77.3:

LOL: 17.3 for poor Karma...

3.8, wonderful!:

Hmmmmm, if you look at this page you can see the top rated. 1st image rated 100/100......it's a silly looking piece of digital art. I'll stick with the human rated system thanks. :)

My favorite is that the National Geographic "Afgan Girl" photo was evaluated and scored a 23....

My recent red ribbon winner gets a 25.8

My Best of '08 entry is a 42.3

Everything else I've tried is pathetic.

Added: This one is a 59.1, came in just shy of a 6 in voting here.

My motivation entry is rated as a 79.7. Currently at a 5.45 in voting.
My furniture entry is being rated at 48 by this. Just over a 6 in voting right now.

I'll take it - it's giving my current 'motivation' entry 89.3/100.
Here, it'll never make a 6, let alone an 8.93 !

My highest ever score got 7.1here and 10.1 there.

My lowest ever score got 4.2 here and 34.1 there.

I like this bit from the first article you posted :

When humans assess the aesthetic quality of photos, score inflation is commonly seen. This is probably because we all want to be more encouraging to others. However, Acquine tries to give you a score that is not inflated. That is, the score actually goes from zero to 100, with 50 being the score of a typical average-quality professional photograph. In another word, a photo with a score of 50 is still a good picture. Acquine is tough!

This likely would have tanked here.
Got a 99.7 there.

That 'system' seems to like darker photos I think.

I just got a 96 for this one

I win!

My intentional effort to get a brownie comes in almost as high as my red ribbon winner at 21:

My brown ribbon is a 96! This proves for certain that I am an unappreciated artistic genius!

As yourdictionary.com defines:

aes¡¤thet¡¤ics (es t̸het¡äiks)noun
the study or theory of beauty and of the psychological responses to it; specif., the branch of philosophy dealing with art, its creative sources, its forms, and its effects

and

beauty (byo̵̅o̅t¡ä¨¥)
noun pl. beauties -¡¤ties
the quality attributed to whatever pleases or satisfies the senses or mind, as by line, color, form, texture, proportion, rhythmic motion, tone, etc., or by behavior, attitude, etc.

Computers dont have emotions or psycological responses... Two similar shots of someone with and without a tear "rising" (dont know the right word) in the eye will be completely different to a human or a machine... and all of this depending on the context where that foto is...

Very fun! For my highest rated photo here, I got a 35.3:

And for my lowest rated FS ever, I got a 50.7:

Can't get anything above that so far, though.
05/15/2009 11:14:20 AM · #16
And I can't get any response now, after one going through.

You broke it!!

- 19.6 - I guess the program doesn't take humor into consideration.
- 7.1 - Not sure if I can get much lower than this
- 85.4 (not my lowest DPC entry but easily my lowest fave)
- 89.9 - highest ranking I could come up with in my top rated

Leonardo da Vinci´s Monalisa got 28.8

I think we have established the accuracy of this system. A work in progress for sure.

I prefer the human voters.... Computers dont buy pictures.

And.... if someone points this out as wrong, and computers do buy pictures, let me know how I can get them to buy mine :)

For the record, this pic on that site got a 70.5.

Personally, I think that's about right; I never understood the accolades that painting gets :-)
