Hi All,
Does anyone know if the 430 EXII can be used off the shoe remotley (infa red ?) from a 40D?

I think so - according to this review it appears to be able to do that

| The 430 will work as a slave, but you need a master such as 580EX II on the camera. |

thanks....so....does that mean I can use the built in flash on my 40d as the master? and when fired this will drive the 430 ?

Nope. The onboard flash is not a master. You will need a 580ex or an ST-E2 transmitter on your cameras hotshoe to be the master. |

| It will fire remotely but will not and can not be used to set others off remotely is the answer, good choice for a lighting stand though |

Like it was said before, the 430ex II can be fired using a ST-E2 or 580ex / 580ex II fired from the camera's hotshoe. You can also fire the flash using an
optical trigger. Or you can go the radio trigger route with Cybersync's or Pocketwizards.
Check out the Strobist, you should find that it will answer most of your questions regarding off camera lighting.

The issue with remote triggering is whether it supports TTL (automatic exposure controlled via the camera's exposure settings). Remote options that support TTL are expensive, like the latest pocket wizards, radio poppers, in-shoe 580, or in-shoe ST-E2.
The options that don't are usually much cheaper, such as most other wireless triggers, optical slaves, and simple sync cables. The price you pay is that you'll be shooting in manual mode and adjusting power by hand on your flashes as you move the lights around.
