I find you have to go with what you feel is right at the end of the day but I do agree, you probably would have done a bit better with number 2. The animal is in perfect focus. Somehow I find that if the focus is lacking over the whole subject it just doesn't work in most cases. Even though the head isn't quite as out of focus as the rest of the shot, it still seems blurry on your entry.

It seems to me that folks respond better to head-on shots than any other sort of dogs-in-motion shot, actually. There's something endearing about them, the determined expressions of various dogs in flight :-)

There is such a great sense of pleasure on the face of a free running dog. I have tons of pics I took at the Dog Beach in Del Mar, it was so much fun (it was my first time there, I am a cat person :)). Some woman remarked to me that she considers the dog beach "the happiest place on Earth", and I tended to agree with her. Here are two of my close contenders

I went with a focused approach, which I thought would be more popular. It was , just not mine. What I prefer is more blurred motion shots.
This one reminds me of a Duchamp painting

My outtake, that one is completely unprocessed as well so would have had to been tweaked some.

However, the main killer there is the background. I spent an afternoon playing with my cat and she refused to jump when I was positioned to get a cleaner backdrop behind her and I got this lovely jump when I was positioned completely wrong for a high jump.

Oh well, I still like the photo though and the tiger stripes on her legs stand out really well.

I took this about 10 hours before the announcement of the challenge. And I wasn't going to throw him into another puddle to reproduce it... :)

I failed to check the site that week (oops!), or else I would have submitted this, which I just happened to take during the contest:
