I've just been asked to so some portraits that will be used on a billboard. I shoot with a eos-1d mark iii. It's 10.1 megapix. Will that be enough pixels? I didn't think so but my client seems to think it's ok. Will I need to rent a Hasselblad monster?

I'd imagine that would be ok. I'm assuming the billboard is being seen from quite a way away, and shouldn't look pixelated unless someone views it up close.

Check with Coley. He had this one bought for a billboard, so he should be able to tell you what they need.

It's more about a good clean image in the first place, and good software than the megapixels of the camera.

A stellar image from a 6MP camera is better than a crappy one from a 12mp unit.

It's helpful then to have something like Genuine Fractals to make really big images.

I've done a 6 foot by 11 foot image with GF and my 6.1MP D70s that looks fantastic.
