The Photographer's Ephemeris Not an image editing app, but still worth including here. Works with Google maps to draw lines on the map showing where Sunrise, Sunset, Moonrise, Moonset will occur for any location and date. For example, this is great for when you want to get photos of the sun setting behind the Golden Gate Bridge, it will show you where you need to be and at what time of year to have the sun be exactly where you want it.

Sorry for a slightly off-topic post but I felt my friends at DPC deserved a heads up concerning Giveaway of the Day listed above.

This is not specific against the site but is intended as a reminder to always be careful about what you download and from who.

On Feb 7th 2009 I installed 2Flyer Screensaver Builder Pro from GotD.

I last used this program Feb 25th.

Now 5 months later AVG Free 8.5 reports that all of the program files within that product contain a trojan horse. Fearing a false positive I submitted the file to AVG Tech and their automated system confirmed it is an actual infection. Google was no help in determining if this was legit so I went to the product page on Giveaway of the Day and the last two comments reported trojan detections by two other Antivirus products.

So it would seem that at least one product on GotD was infected with something and it was either just caught 2-5 months later or it was camouflaged until yesterday. So keep your anti-virus programs up to date and use them daily even if you haven't installed anything new!

Sorry if this post is unwelcome in this thread, I just wanted to make sure that anyone who downloaded from that site knew about this. Thank you.

Has anyone tried Smilla, especially in comparison to Genuine Fractals? Is it a good free solution if GF is too much $$$?

Picasa is a great editing tool, it is pretty straight forward...BUT if you use is on here (DPC) and you are called on for an original you will get DQ'd...I used it for my original download for this shot and was asked for my original, which I provided from my "original file" and SC said that it had something "altered" in it that Picasa did. The final edits were done in PSE7 but my original was downloaded from my camera "through" Picasa. Also one other major thing that I do not like...if you post on their website...they will and do post your pictures on the web...I looked up my grand nephew's name (and many other names of people that I had posted on the web) and sure enough he was on google's image search...I was furious (he was only 8 at the time)...what is the point of having a password to your account if it is going to be public anyway...

Always download pictures from your camera using the manufacturer's software OR direct copy from your media to your PCs hard drive. SC has been pretty up front about the fact that some software (even Windows viewer) will modify an original so it would be DQ'd. If you then want to open it in Picasa, make a copy of the original downloaded file and edit away...
