I'm thinking about buying a Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS - I would pay just over £1000 in the UK for this lens, but I''m in the US next week, could I pick this lens up for less than $1500 there? I'm there for a week so I might be in a position to buy online and get it delivered to the hotel - any suggestions on a supplier? I might be in the market for a 1.4X teleconverter too.

Alternatively, s it worth visiting a good store? I'll be in Pittsburgh.

Many thanks

Paul

B&H is pretty relaibale.

I also heard rumors that a redesign of the lens coming soon. Probably going away from the push-pull zoom design.

These pop up quite a lot on craigslist London - obviously used but generally around the £750 - £800 mark.

Can you rely on the items of Craiglist ?

I have a question about this lens and the push/pull zoom.
I just rented one today for the weekend.

The push/pull system seems extremely difficult to adjust. I understand that it can be tightened and loosened...but it still seems too tight to make shooting different distances easily & quickly. I'd be a bit hesitant to purchase one if it is like this.
Another issue - the camera store didn't have the hood. I tried to use my 70-200 hood but it seems just a tad off on fit.

It does seem to have gunk underneath when we move the zoom.

Any suggestions?

You have to loosen the ring in order to zoom in an out. How tight will depend on what you're doing and how stiff you like it. I loosen it all the way and leave it like that while I'm shooting. If I need to avoid zoom creep I tighten it in the zoom position I want.
