announced here

If they keep this up they're going to have camera at each $100 mark! Is it just me or does anyone else think this is overkill in the range?

I just wish with all these updates that the higher end stuff (light the low light capabilities) would trickle down quicker to the mid range cameras.

I'd like to have options. The more cameras you have to choose from the higher the chance you have of getting a camera that fits your specific needs.

It seems like overkill (for a $270 price difference), except the D5000 does have some new features compared with the D90.

Same:
- Sensor size
- auto-focus system (11 point)
- Video

The D5000 has:
- LCD view can be swung out and rotated.
- 19 automatic scene modes
- perspective control for architectural distortion correction
- GPS

but doesn't have:
- multiple speedlight control
- DOF preview
- ancillary battery pack
edited to add:
- auto-focus motor in the body (see question below)

From what I am reading in the announcement it does not have the Auto focus motor in the body. Can someone confirm that for me. If that is correct, that would limit you to manual focus or purchasing the lenses with the auto focus motor in the lens like the lenses the d40 uses.

A pointless/useless addition to the Nikon Family. I don't see a whole lot of these being sold.

Correct.

WHEN IS THE D400 COMING !

Sure would be nice if they came out with something that can compete with the 5d mkii.

I suppose some people might be interested in this new line, but the lack of the focus motor is still going to alienate a large chunk of potential customers

Official Nikon-EU link.

We still dont know how it compares with D90 in image quality, but it seems to be inheriting most of D90's features.

It in fact looks like a model placed between D60 and D90. But I wonder why they left out the focus drive motor. Aaah.. I get it. They need some differentiation between a D90 and a D5k other than the name:-)

Yeah, if you look at the original poster's link, the article begins "The company has just announced the D5000, a model that bridges the gap between its popular D60 and D90 models"

$729 for the d5000 body, but I got my d90 body for $839. Unless somebody REALLY needs a swing out LCD or 19 Auto scene modes, d90 is a no-brainer choice. This feels like a weird tangent for Nikon to take, almost competing only with their own products.

I can't understand why they don't put in an autofocus motor. I guess that the versions without them are selling well to not include it but it is isolating a lot of photographers who want to upgrade. With that said...
It has a flip screen and live view!!! IMO opinion that makes this camera an awesome street photography machine! I am uncertain about live view but someone correct me if I am wrong, but in live view there is no mirror slap, correct? This would mean that you would have point and shoot silence with DSLR quality and would would be able to stay inconspicuous and not need to bring the camera up to your eye. That is pretty sweet. I hope they keep the flip screen for future upgraded bodies.

I personally dont feel for the extras it offers on top of the D60 that it is worth the price. I dont care for more pixels (mine is fine) or the 11 point focus (mine is fine) and maybe the live view is good for some but I do fine without it. I just think mine does all I need it to do. It might be ok for others but its not for me.

I have a D40 right now, and the D60 is basically a D40 on 'roids, and the D90 is just too damn expensive.

What would I get on the D90 that I wouldn't on the D5000?

1. Multiple SpeedLight control - I don't even have ONE SpeedLight.
2. DOF Preview - It's a digital camera! I'll take the same shot at 10 different apertures if I'm worried about DOF! And if I don't have time to do that, I'll take a few shots ahead of time and see what works best. DOF Preview is, like, so 35mm...
3. Extra Battery Pack - Potentially useful, but personally... just added weight. I'd rather buy an extra couple batteries and keep them in the car. As for the shutter-on-the-side thing... overrated.
4. In-body AF motor - The new, IF lenses are good enough that I don't feel the need to get other (older) ones. The price difference is offset (in most cases) by higher quality glass, too.

All 4 are things that the D40 doesn't have, and that I can live without. I really want Live View and video capture, though, and I think they're worth the price. Speaking of price... just 'cause the D5000 will be $729 (retail) doesn't mean you won't be able to get it for less. So, chromeydome, comparing what you got the D90 for with what the D5000's retail price will be is like comparing apples to oranges. Be careful comparing wholesale-after-a-few-months to retail-when-it-comes-out. I'm willing to bet I'll be able to get the D5000 for ~$650 in a few months.

If you use liveview for video, there is mirror slap only when you enter the liveview mode, and then the other one when you exit it. All the time when you are recording the video is silent.

If you use liveview to compose a still shot however, at least with D90 there is only one automatic way to focus: contrast AF. Then when you are done focussing (auto or manual), once you hit the shutter button, liveview disengages for a second or two to allow the picture to be taken. At this moment there is a noise.

Good rundown of the features on all three (from dpreview.com)

Yeah, It in fact looks like a model placed between D60 and D90. I have a D60 now for $547. The D5000 may be a little expensive than it.
