My husband and I are going to go on a 2 wk camping trip in May to see and explore the Natchez Trace in Mississippi...Does anyone have any suggestions that are a "must do/see" on the trail? We are starting May 21st in Natchez, Mississippi and will go North from there...I think we may end up in Memphis, TN for the end of the trip to enjoy the Blues/BBQ....Thanks for your time...

Hi there! I live in Natchez, and go to the Trace from time to time. While I haven't really been to many of the historic sites, I can say that Mount Locust is pretty neat (the photos on the site don't do it justice). There's usually a park ranger or some other worker at the house to tell you the history if you want, but they generally leave you alone to explore the area. Very, very pretty location. Plenty of photo ops this time of year.
One site you CAN pass up is the Elizabeth Female Academe. It's pretty much just a wall and a fence.

Sorry I'm not very helpful! I usually just use the road itself as a backdrop when I go to the Trace, haha, but I should probably explore the landmarks a bit more.

Nathanael...that is a good article...I wonder if that is the setting for the book by Navada Barr, I have read that one quite awhile ago and will have to research that...that article also gave me some more links to explore...thank you

Yeah, that's definitely the location where Barr placed Anna Pigeon in Hunting Season.

Does anyone know if/where I can find a listing of war reenactments that would be going on in Mississippi? I have googled it but haven't found anything listed for May yet....just thought someone might know of another area I could look in...Thank you

I live in Tennessee near Shiloh National Park and most of the reenactments in this area were last month and early this month. Not sure about Mississippi but you could call Shiloh National Park and get some info on other sites and also their park at (731) 689-5696. Hope this helps. By the way if you get time to drive the trace up to Nashville stop in Shiloh very pretty place for photos!

I live in Vidalia, LA...just across the river from Natchez. I don't know of much that actually happens on the Natchez Trace itself...there are a few landmarks, some nature trails, etc. The cities of Natchez, Port Gibson and Vicksburg, though, are all very interesting and full of history. You can look through my portfolio and see lots of photos from all of the areas and here are links to my pbase galleries.

Natchez City Cemetery this is a gorgeous, park-like, cemetery filled with beautiful statues and monuments. Lots of Civil War dignitaries...lots of oak, cedar and crepe myrtle trees all dripping with spanish moss and lots of antique roses.

Natchez, Port Gibson, Grand Gulf Military Park, Vicksburg, and Frogmore Plantation in Louisiana Grand Gulf Military Park in Port Gibson, MS is very interesting, as is Vicksburg. Very historic places.

Bellefontaine Cemetery in north St. Louis 4947 West Florissant Avenue, St. Louis, MO...a really, really interesting place, there is a tour book that they have in the front office with about 50 descriptions of the most interesting plots...it is full of history...it took us about 2 1/2 hours to tour it...our weather was quite rainy so I only got a few shots off there, not your normal cemetery by a long shot...

Yes definitely check out the Natchez City Cemetery. It's stunning; photo ops around every corner. You can pick up a map at the visitor's center, I'm sure. While in Natchez you might also want to check out St. Mary Basilica. It's a beautiful church that is open till five on most days (Mass is at 5 on Saturday, I believe). It's really quite wonderful. Tons of statues, architecture, huge stained glass windows and paintings. Extremely ornate.

thank you so much, I will be sure to go to both places...we are trying to plan our trip as to what to see along the trail, I have a "creepy" infatuation with cemeteries...don't know why...but they give such great B&W images...I would love to find a re-enactment that would be going on, but I haven't found any listings yet...wouldn't that be great to stumble upon something like that...I love history, old things and "Americana"...hope we find some

I know they had a few re-enactments late last year, but I haven't seen any advertised recently. A good place to check for this is the Visitor's Center Downtown and also Natchez Coffee Company (509 Franklin St, downtown) they have a post board that most events get put on. Hope you get to see one!

Well, just to let you guys know that we are having a wonderful time in Mississippi...

sher I actually did find the Baptist Church in Rodney...and Windsor Ruins...boy that was a day!!!...went down "one" windy dirt road to find that it just ended in someone's farm (the water is high on that side of the river...) and the First Baptist Church was surrounded by water...such a shame...also went to Port Gibson, Grand Gulf Military Park, Natchez City Cemetery(and many, many more) and went to Frogmore Plantation...but that had just closed and we didn't go back (Louisiana side of the river is quite "different" from Natchez side)

Nathanael_G forgot about the Coffee Shop (didn't have internet service to remind me) BUT I did get some good shots of "St. Mary's Basilica"

and stultsphoto we are planning on going to Shiloh State Park as well as the one where Merriweather Lewis was buried....

Today we went to Mount Locust Plantation where Navada Barr book Hunting Season was based on...and we went to the Vicksburg Military Park....

Anyone have any suggestions for Jackson (where we are now) and Tupelo (where we will be in a few days)...I only have internet connection for a day...so I will ck back...once again...thanks everyone for the suggestions....
