from a newbie and a dummy ...
i have a 300D with the EF-S kit lens ... i'm thinking of buying another lens ... most likely the entry level Canon 50mm f/1.8
my question is ... if i buy this lens , will i only be able to use one aperture value ? ( f/1.8 )

thanks ... < and you can stop laughing now >

That question is indeed ... interesting ;)
You can of course use other apterture values as well, the number that is given next to the focal length is only the smallest that is available. The lens probably goes up to 22 (maybe even 32). The only lenses that have fixed apertures are mirror lenses.

actually, f/1.8 is the largest aperture for that lens :) and that'd be considered pretty good, a fast lens for sure.

Is a 50mm lens a good choice for a prime on a digital SLR? In particular, I know this is a popular lens for film SLR's because it results in a a picture with approximately the same magnification as we get with our eyes. With the 1.6 conversion factor of a Canon DSLR, does this still hold true?

Thanks!

Nope - it behaves like a 85mm lens, essentially a lightweight telephoto, but it should be noted that 85mm is a popular lens for portrait work on a regular 35mm camera - it gives you some working distance from the subject.

Regardless, the 50mm f/1.8 form Canon is an absolutely killer lens to have in your kit for the cost (incredibly cheap), the sharpness (like a tack), and the weight (light as a feather).

I have heard some people question the lens durability (cheap and plastic feeling), but I have never much worried about it. It is so short, it really doesn't get banged around much. Your mileage may vary.

emphasis on ( incredibly cheap ) :) ... i've read about how unsatisfied a lot of people are with the quality of their pics with the EF-S lens and thought of returning the entire kit only to change their minds after getting the 50mm lens ( or another lens ) for that matter.

thanks.
