I prefer the horizontal composition. It gives perspective to the image.
Updated comment suggesting different vertical crop.

I dont really like the fence at all, I really dont think it adds anything to the photo. I love the lighthouse though, its a fantastic subject and shot. |

I had some time to kill, so I hope you don't mind I lifted the photo and played around with it some. Not very sharp, since the file I used was small, but this is how I would edit, I think:
Lighthouse Edit
It is a cool subject! You could spend a lot of time getting shots in such a pretty place! |

I like this version the original because your edit got rid of unwanted clutter and still framed it using the rule of thirds making for a more pleasing photo. |
