Yeah, mine dropped by .8 with less than 10 new votes; I was really hoping the scoring was part of the joke. I guess the only joke is my entry! |

Ditto - mine dropped .6 between 47 votes and 55 votes. Ah well, I enjoyed the score while it lasted! |

Well I just got my first comment after 57 votes and a lower score than I thought I would get and it went like this, "This is a good image, unfortunately, you see similar images all the time both on other forums and here". I appreciate the comment and maybe am wrong in assuming I'm getting voted down for shooting a familiar spot rather than a familiar style. But this spot was new to me in the big city I live in and I thought I shot it pretty well and in a unique way. I hope I don't have to start driving out of town now to blaze a new "uncaptured trail" or suffer in the voting? Some of us live in crowded places with lots of photographers and I hope we can still be judged by the quality of our work regardless of whether someone else has shot the same place before? |

If all good entries are getting slammed, I hope reverse is not true because my entry is doing good. Or, will my score move even higher when scores are adjusted to remove low scoring prank?? |

Hey how funny would it be if just for a laugh DPC have reversed the scores as a final joke, so if someone votes you a 9 you actually get a 2 lol. |

Well, then I really DO suck, because that score is just shy of my long term average on this site. |

That comment was mine and I think you've taken it the wrong way. I remember it if only because it was good image - by good, I mean technically it met the criteria, in context it was acceptable and properly focused, proper light, yada, yada, yada - but ordinary with nothing to recommend it in any particular way. With respect to seeing it from a composition standpoint - the simple truth is that these kinds of images are submitted all the time across camera groups and they are all the same - there is nothing to recommend them - technically they are good, but not outstanding, extra ordinary, show stopping - you name it. If you take an ordinary everyday scene and photography, you need to significantly impact the viewer by doing something out of the ordinary - a different angle, a different compositon - maybe an overlay, false color, infrared - you need to be creative with the ordinary in other words is what I was trying to impart.
I'll give you an example of what I mean. I do a lot of competition dispute adjutication for six different clubs - it's a talent. :>) Recently, just by pure accident, there were four submissions by members of one club who all took a shot of Crater Lake - from the same spot on the same day of the same subject - two of the images were actualy taken one hour apart. Out of the four, one was significantly better than the others - all of which, by the way, were very good images - but ordinary. The one I judged to be the best was unique in that the photographer had used the light to the best advantage, used slightly different angle, a different style lens (a 11-22mm) and lower ISO with longer exposure time - it stood out and I agreed with the judging panel that it was the best of the four. The nice thing about it was that when my decison was explained to the other three photographers, they eventually came around to seeing what I meant and everybody went home happy.
You don't have to go to extremes to get and/or create a unique image - you just need to be creative with the ordinary. That's what I was getting at.
You may now return to your regularly scheduled programming. :>)
PS: I rated all 475 images and commented on 175 - took five hours over two days. And I enjoyed every single minute of it. :>)

An average score does not mean you suck - it means that over the period, a majority thought the image was average. I would take that as a plus - an average image is much better than a lousy image. |

Guess I shouldn't be disappointed going from a 5.7 to 5.46. I don't expect much though. |

It's also important to remember that the bar is high on this site, even more so in a freestudy. Average here is a shot that will have your friends and relatives saying what a good photographer you are. |
