This sort of misinterpretation is exactly why DPC is suffering with low votes lately, far too many people decide to take an extremely literal (and all too often incorrect) interpretation on the challenges, then seek to push those views on others.

I'm not pushing anything, merely stating my opinion, to which I'm entitled to and I'm not even voting this contest, so nobody is suffering low votes from me. Besides that, if I were to vote, I never vote low, just because I have a different opinion on the subject, if the photo itself is of good content and quality.

That's like saying: "To me, money is American currency only." or "To me, candy is only chocolate."

Oh man, woke up to a shock this morning. Only thing is is that these are typically higher scoring challenges and hard to get DNMC votes so I suspect there's quite a few higher than this. I am stoked though and I'm knocking on some serious wood for posting it...

Not too shabby, I feel, for my second challenge. Hopefully I'll beat my record of 4.6292. Maybe even someday (fingers crossed) I'll get a 4.8 Figure I'll take baby-steps with my goals here at DPC.

This is more like it! Very much expected. At least I have two fantastic comments that make it all worth it.

Wow, so far so much higher than my usual. As this is my first submission with my new camera it would be great to achieve a new PB... Here's hoping.

Pretty much what I expected, it's not a bad shot but it's boring... At least my free study is doing alright.

Uh-oh. Moving on down .02 points. Not bueno. Come on 4.2!
04/01/2009 11:30:37 AM · #44
Try something different and get slammed in the nuts! 4.9xxx from 31 votes. Time to sell the camera.

Right, let's bring out some recent excuses:

You guys don't understand the work of a genius
You're probably scoring me down because it's SO good and threatens yours
You need to get your monitors calibrated because it looks great on mine
Some of the voters are obviously confused because the title and description differed

Any more??

I have to say I agree with this. Flora is supposed to be a term used to describe naturally occurring or indigenous plants, usually in reference to a certain area or time period (like the flora of the Jurassic Period or the flora of the Hawaiian Islands).

But, just like I wouldn't lower my vote in the Fauna Challenge for a great shot of a tiger in a zoo (which isn't naturally ocurring), I'm not going to lower my vote for a great shot of a flower in a vase. Normally, I just try to vote according to the picture's quality and trust that the submitter believed that it fit the challenge and that they're probably not trying to "get away" with anything. I suppose that that flower was once naturally ocurring somewhere, and so is/was flora somewhere, sometime. Unless it was bio-engineered or something...?

My 2-cents (aka: Wikipedia) Agricultural or garden flora -- plants that are deliberately grown by humans. So, while that flower in the vase may not be part of the flora of your particular environment, it will forever be a certain type of flora. Although, I wonder, is it really proper to label any individual of a group as the group as a whole? ie. Is any particular flower or plant really "flora?" Wouldn't you have to photograph a group of plants to really have a picture of "flora." And what about the gut flora? Have we all forgotten of them? Hard to photograph, I guess, without a microscope, or just being nasty....Hmm....Now that I think about it, forget I said anything :)

Bah! Great idea after the fact. I work in a bookstore and we have several beautiful (and huge, like 2ft tall) reproductions of different Flora (ie. the treatise type) from the 1800's. Great line engravings. Should've taken some pictures of people flipping through them. Sigh, hope I remember that idea for Flora IV.
