Hi all

I'm heading to Santa Barbara, CA for 10 days or so. I've been before, but it was without my camera.

I'd be grateful for any ideas of photo opportunities for when I have some downtime. I will have a car for local transport.

Thanks in advance.

Absolutely our most favorite place in the world. Been there nine times. Tons of great scenes to photograph:
Without a doubt the beach and all its activities.
Don't miss the mission of Santa Barbara.
In town, my favorite- the Merry Go Round.
Little known place- outside of town- Orchid farm.
Walk out on the old pier for some great shots looking back at the beach. If you are lucky, there will be some surfers on the water. Your shots will look like you are out on the water with them. And definitely have lunch at one of the local eateries on the pier.
Stop at the tourist info both right in town. There is a hotel, I believe it is the Fess Parker, that is absolutely gorgeous inside.

Have a great trip.

Here's a link the parking in downtown Santa Barbara. Pick a lot and start walking.

Also check out the waterfront -- Stearns Wharf, Chase Palm Park, Shoreline Park, the Breakwater.

There are some nice shots of the Mission from the rose garden on Plaza Rubio.

Enjoy.

Thanks for the tips.

As I say last time I didn't take a camera and spent all my non-working time in bars or running the Jesusita trail (both very hard work).

I used to lived down there, back in my film days. Lots of great subjects to shoot. In addition to the other in-city reccs above, the Courthouse downtown (old mission style adobe) is also a good place to shoot.

If you're looking for a good hike, try Rattlesnake Canyon or Mission Canyon -- the locals will be able to tell you how to get there. The botanic garden (in Mission Canyon) is also a fabulous place to shoot, and easy to get to just 5-10 minutes up from the old Mission.

Lizards Rock is great for sunset shots ... a bunch of sandstone formations high up in the hills overlooking the Pacific. Off Old San Marcos Pass Road I think, but again ask the locals (or pick up a local hiking book).

A little further out, head up Hwy 154 (the "new" San Marcos Pass road). Stop at Knapp's Castle (ask locally) for some shots of the ruins of an old estate overlooking Lake Cachuma that burned down 100 or more years ago. Continue towards Solvang and the wine country. Solvang is a Disneyesque recreation of a Danish village, but the wine country around there is pretty. Ballard Canyon is nice, as are the areas off Zaca Creek road (Zaca Mesa and Firestone wineries, and Zaca Lake).

For a longer day of it, turn right off Hwy 154 at Solvang and head up to Figueroa Mountain. Great trails around there, and the wildflowers should be blooming pretty good about now. On the way back, stop in at the Cold Springs Tavern for a few cold ones (and if its the weekend a blues band should be playing for a large crowd of friendly bikers)

There's a lot more around to shoot and discover, but that oughta get you started.

Make sure you get some clam chowder at Brophy's. And if you're anywhere out by the airport, go the Beachside Cafe and have the scallops kabob. In addition to fine scenery, Santa Barbara has some pretty good food, too.

Downtown I've seen some buses which seem to have a gigantic pencil on the roof ...

Santa Barbara Mission, the county court house, downtown SB, and the pier are some nice places.
They have a Samy's camera store there as well if you are inclined to buy anything photo related.
