I entered the Laguage contest and the photo i entered i changed the colors in. Does this comply with the basic editing?
03/23/2009 10:43:52 PM · #2
You may: "saturate, desaturate or change the colors of your entry, but no selections are allowed."
And no new elements may be added that were not in the original. So you were likely fine.

If your changes were universal you're fine. If you used a selection tool to isolate an area for your changes, nope.

eta; I'm too slow!

If it was a filter there could be problems, I think. Using the regular tools, such as colour-balance are okay but many of the filters are no-nos because they automatically select certain areas. The best idea would be to send a ticket to SC via Help>Contact us, tell/show them what you did and let them figure it out :)

Hope this helps because I had the same kinda question-

----- Original Message (DPC:15914) -----
Under Basic Editing rules it states: "use only Adjustment Layers (or their equivalent). An Adjustment Layer is a special type of layer containing no image data that lets you experiment with color and tonal adjustments without permanently modifying the pixels. Adjustment Layers must be applied in Normal mode."
I am using Photoshop 6 Elements and my question is this: Under the Layer option, I have- New Adjustment Layer. Under that I have these drop-down choices: levels, bright/contrast, hue/sat, gradient map, photo filter, invert, threshold, and posterize. May I use these options?

----------

Hi John,

You're in the clear with that processing workflow choices.

Regards,

Frisca

yeah I am abit worried about Basic editing myself.
I dont edit my photos in challenge's ive entered i get a lot of comments saying...more contrast would have been nice etc but I'm scared ill get disqualifed as being rather new to photography i dont really know what i can and cant do...even thought it say's you can fine tune your photos with colour, contrast etc...ok whats etc...can i sharpen them if i want?
and it says No selection tools... i have photoshop but havent got into it much and im fingered if i know what they class Selection Tools..lol.
So my question is...in this next challenge i have sharpened and added a little contrast to my photo for basic editing...is this ok?

You can use adjustment layers such as levels, curves, contrast, saturation, etc, but not the tools on the left hand side panel of your photoshop screen, they're the ones that alter only parts of the image. As far as I know, you can't mask the adjustment layers though....is that right? So you can definitely adjust contrast with an adjustment layer, you can also use the sharpen, dust scratches, and noise removal filters.

what about cropping your photo?

Cropping is allowed in all rule sets except for Minimal Editing.

Masking an adjustment layer is the same as making a selection for that adjustment -- not allowed in Basic Editing, but OK to use (with some limitations) in Advanced Editing. Also note that in Basic Editing, Adjustment Layers must be kept in Normal Mode.
04/05/2009 03:52:12 AM · #19
In Photoshop CS4, when you create a new adjustment layer, it automatically creates a mask with it. I'm not sure how to go about stopping it doing that, would I be disqualified because the layer had a mask, even if I didn't actually alter the mask?
04/05/2009 03:55:56 AM · #20
No, if you leave the mask white, you are not picking which pixels to change, so it remains a global change, keep the layer on normal and you are fine for Basic.

EXIF only matters if the SC requests an original photo for a validation. The copy you enter into the challenge can be completely void of EXIF. The original for validation would need to be straight out of the camera and completely unaltered.

lol, and don't even think about adding a vignette in lightroom or any other program! I got stung on that one on my second challenge entry - ouch- thought it was just a global change as it was a simple push of a slider to emphasise the existing lens vignette, but no, I got a right royal smack on the hand and promise never to do it again ;-)
