I have been looking at getting a new lens but I'm not familiar with the various specs. Here are the ones I am considering:

Canon EF 100-300 f/4-5-5,6 USM
Canon EF 70-300 f/4-5,6 IS USM
Canon EF 75-300 f/4-5,6 III USM
Tamron 28-300mm F3,5-6,3 XR Di VC LD Ca

If anyone has any experience/recommendations I would very much like to hear them.

Many thanks.

Charlotte,

What other lenses do you have?
What do you like to shoot more: wildlife/action/landscapes/sports/indoors?
What is your budget?

I guess my main purpose at the moment is wildlife and landscapes.

I have the Canon EF 70-300 f/4-5,6 IS USM lens and it is very good, the IS is well worth the extra money over the non IS lens.

I've not used the Tamron though so can't compare it.

If you really don't have a budget then the cannon 100-400L is worth looking at, it's about 3 times the cost of the 70-300 IS and about 3 times the weight so not ideal as a carry round lens. I also have this lens and I use this when I don't mind the extra weight.

Have you considered the Canon 70-200 f/4 lens?

Its supposedly so sharp it will beat a softer 300mm cheaper lens because you will be able to crop more.

Fantastic lens that one is.

No budget is a rare thing, but assuming that's really the case!

16-35mm F2.8L for your landscapes

100-400 or 400 2.8L for your wildlife

Any lens you get with both a wide angle and telephoto range all in one is going to do a poor job at both while it excels at neither.

Now if the cost of the aforementioned glass motivates you to create a budget, then of the lenses you listed the 28-300 is the only one which will handle everything you want to do in one purchase.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to say that I have an unlimited budget. What I meant was that I haven't set a limit to how much I want to spend but I will based on the recommendations.

What is the difference between IS and non IS?

IS = Image Stabilisation (on the canon lenses) it's called VR (Vibration Reduction) on others

It means you can shoot at much slower shutter speeds without camera shake. Rule of thumb you need to shoot at approx 1/(focal length) .. ie if you shoot at 300mm you need to shoot at a shutter speed of 1/300 to avoid blurry shots due to camera shake. With the IS on the 70-300 you can shoot at 1/30 with a steady hand without camera shake. Obviously if you are shooting moving subjects that'll be too slow.

If you dont have a budget then I'd recommend these two.

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L
Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS

The first is a wide angle the second a telephoto. I have both and they take gorgeous shots... I'm handicapping them actually lol.

75-300mm is a WASTE OF MONEY. don't get it.

If "no budget" means "I have zero dollars" instead of "I have a bajillion dollars!"...I have heard fabulous things about the Tokina 80-200 f/2.8...it's like $350 used and if you look at the Flickr group for it, it's really very sharp.

The 70-200 f/4 or f/2.8 lenses are the only reason I will buy a Canon again.
