Take my entry for example...

I am not unhappy with the outcome, but to think the same shot that came in 38th out of 1114 here,
beat out 200,000 photo entries to gain entry into Parade magazine...

Well you beat me babe...my shot has won comps and been purchased by hierarchy in the past...and yet...a measly 6.2...sheesh!

Judi you dont count, everyone buys your photos, If I didnt know you so well I would pay to have some of your work on my wall! I am curious If that poll that asked about paying more money to be a member of DPC, to get prizes in return Had passed, would you still have to work or could you just make a living here :))))

Almost all photos got more than 500 votes so they must be fair, at least in comparison to each other. Some challenges on DPReview get 500 entries and around 20-40 votes per entry with leaves a lot of scope for individual votes to have a massive impact on the overall score. That couldn't happen here and any score is as accurate as it can be from the population sampled.

To a viewer the value of an image is in the emotion it imparts in the mind.

To a photographer the value of his/her image is in the emotional attachment they have to it.

My entry means a lot to me, but was just eye-candy to the majority of the viewers. I had better quality photos, but this meant the most to me emotionally.

Hahahaha....you are too sweet...! You may not have conquered my landscapes...but I still haven't captured your birds....so we are square...not just in that area...but in the amount of sales under our belt. Now if you want to argue...you will feel the sting of my whips again...!!!!!!

Thanks Mark, Though I would rather not discuss B/W over Color or the crop, as now Im thinking I should send a BW cropped version to NatGeo :)..
what I was really trying to express Is that No one should feel bad as long as they are proud of their work, the score here is not etched in stone, but a reflection of many different photographers with many different skill levels.
I seem to always jump in these types of threads as I know what its like to think your work is not as good as you thought. your photo is every bit as good now as it was before the challenge...

Hay...back off mate...I am still waiting for that pastry from that cute chef at the cafe near the river, that I asked you to get me yesterday...and what did you do? Ignored me...that's what you did! So my whips are waiting for you....! You may have entered a prettier picture than me...(who can compete against deer when all you have is an old man in the image) but as Marcus said..." You cant win an argument with a Aussie Chick"!!!!

Strangest scoreline I have ever had. So many low scores. Most disappointing. Strange thing are the many mostly complimentary comments on the whole.
I reckon I should have finished just over 6.0000

Ps. Many thought it was HDR. Well it was but not really. I took this shot about 2 years ago and the original was a single jpeg in color. I never even had Photomatix back then. I took this jpeg, converted to b&w and processed it as a pseudo hdr in Photomatix.

I don't even have the original out of camera jpeg anymore. I processed this from a already processed and resized jpeg version that I posted on a forum back then. The original is long lost.

Might be your processing, I gave it that 6 although I don't really go for that HDR style. Many voters don't.

:) Well 6 is a nice score for this. Thanks Oliver. I was hoping this image to get around a 6 as a final average.

Ps. I like your shot too. You got a 7 from me during voting. :)

I was also relatively happy with my score.
However very few of the bottom placed images in this challenge got 15 1's!

I can't believe that you would admit that your photo should be DQed in the forum.

"I don't even have the original out of camera jpeg anymore.

An observation I have often made. It's the "Eye Candy" haters that give 'em.

Certainly not the best shot in the world and it finished around about where I thought, but 1's & 2's, really?!?

btw, I decided against another red arrows shot, the one in the challenge wasn't mine ;)

Seen your comments. It was a candid shot, and I didn't have much control over the direction of light, focus, exposure, white balance... otherwise I would've missed the shot altogether.
Some call it a snapshot, for me it is a nice candid shot!

Just curious - Did everyone get more of their share of 1s and 2s than they felt they deserved?
Especially for this challenge - I only gave one 1 and the picture got DQd anyway. I gave no 2s.
1 is Bad. That is the definition. It's kind of surprising to me that my picture would look "bad" to anyone.
03/18/2009 08:05:28 AM · #47
Yeah...I knew my entry wouldn't appeal to everyone but I didn't think I would get 1's and 2's. Not as many anyways!
I didn't vote on all the entries but I didn't see anything in there that I would have given a 1 or 2 (not many 3's either).

That is exactly what I am trying to find out. I got 15 x 1. It is actually a peak in the curve there.
if I look at all other pictures statistics the number of 1's seems to be proportionally correct.
1 or 2 1's always seem to happen & here there where more votes than normal.
