Dear Friends,

Many of you know me from DPC and local meet-ups; but, I am writing to ask for your help and advice!

I am redoing my portfolio, site, blog, branding, everything... starting over! My work is very good, and I do book a few weddings a year; but, I want to really increase my portfolio this year!

I have been doing pretty well as a part-time photographer (4 to 5 weddings a year around the $2500 mark); but, I always had a full time job to pay bills with. Wedding money was for trips, equipment, learning, & fun! Now, I've been unemployed for over 3 months, and am trying to live on my photography... it's not easy, especially since I was still a few years away from this transition. Eating ramen noodles again (after being out of college for 10 years) is really humiliating; but, I know I'm not the only one in this boat.

The reason I am writing is to ask your for your advice on 2nd shooting. I want to have more beautiful locations and brides in my portfolio! I also want to be out there, shooting and practicing, honing my skills at least once every other month (if not more).

If any of you know where I can find a photographer who needs a 2nd shooter for April, May & June weddings this year, please let me know. I want to take on two or three weddings.

I do not expect pay for these gigs, only the guarantee that I can use the photos I shoot in my own portfolio, marketing, and business sites / material without limits. I am also hoping for referrals when the primary photog is booked and cannot take on another wedding that day.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Sincerely,
Arielle Haze

If you was near I would give you a paid trial. Sadly being in the UK probably isnt too much help.

Good luck!

Haha, thanks Simms. I am a professional photographer, so I do appreciate the offer. What I am looking for are weddings to fill my spring weekends. I have summer and fall bookings, but spring is a bit slow; and, I want to go out and shoot! I would love to 2nd shoot some weddings with some local photogs!

join your local PPA organization, attend meetings, chat people up. Get the member directory.
You then have an 'in' with the other members.

Try craigslist...yeah, I know, but ramen noodles can be motivating ;p

It takes time to build up business. Most marketing takes money. David's Bridal stores will sell their customer lists to 'approved' photographers. Cost varies by store/market but around here 99% of brides get their dresses before they choose a photographer.

Arielle...

If you recall, I have a friend getting married April 18th. She had already booked a photog, but if you are looking to be able to shoot without pay and use the photos for self-promotion, she might like to have you, as she is on a limited budget. If you are interested, PM me and I will give you her number.
