Okay, I'm one of those stat freaks. I guess its just the way my brain works. I find the Overall Average shown on votes received to be rather useless if this is considered to be a learning site. For example, my 1000 challenge score is not as dear as I'd like it to be and given that I have received a high number of votes at that lower number, its has dragged my average down. That is not the problem but what is the problem is that these scores further dilute my Overall Average therefore making my future "Stupendous" scores less influential. My average is getting stuck!!

Okay so what am I bantering about?? I'd find it much more helpful to see my average for either the last 25 challenges or for the last year as an example. This would offer a better measure of progress for those who are trying to use that stat as a trend line. I can say for certain my abilities in photography have improved from when I started and would find this revised and "more current" tracking to be beneficial.

I've somewhat discounted the "Favorite Photographer" as a skewed mixture of "Photographic skill" and "Forum Popularity". It is somewhat useless to me as it leans more on the side of "Forum Popularity.

This updated way of tracking averages would be beneficial to me as a user. No questions in my mind.

And before I get slammed by those who say I can do that through an excel spread sheet, I'd rather this be on the site than in my "geek" files.

It probably would be a good indicator. The more challenges entered the longer it takes to pull your average up.

By the way, you could just do that with a spreadsheet.' . substr('//webpages.charter.net/yospiff/Images/Smileys/ROTFLMAO.gif', strrpos('//webpages.charter.net/yospiff/Images/Smileys/ROTFLMAO.gif', '/') + 1) . '

I'd like to see an added stat for something like "average over last 25 challenges", but not if it replaces the overall average.

Also, I don't agree that this is a "learning site". I agree that it has many aspects to it that push learning, and it may have started under an umbrella statement that it was meant for the originators to learn and grow, but at its core, as it stands, this site is a contest site, I believe.

As for the "favorite photographer", wouldn't something like that always be a useless stat as far as photography itself goes? It's there purely for the friendship/popularity aspect. I think anyone putting any more meaningful attachment to it isn't being honest with themselves to begin with. It's part of the fun, and should simply be left alone.

I agree. Actually what would be helpful is to have a drop-down number field (on Profile or Preference page) that would show your average based on what you selected. The data is there and would be a fun tool for DPChallenge to implement. For example, the drop-down number selector could have the choices of (last) 10, 25, 50, 100, or (by year) 2008, 2007, 2006, etc...

I agree! The more stats & sorting functions the better. I love options when it comes to browsing. I would love to browse by 'most favorited' this week or this month or whatever. I would love to see how photographers have improved over time when I view their profiles. And of course I agree I want to see how my average has changed overtime without keeping track myself.

I agree with you on that point and have accepted that stat for what it is, a measure of friendship moreso than a measure of admiration for photography.

On that note though, would it be worthwhile to have the "Site Favorites" stats on the "Photos" tab reflect a more recent reflection of these stats as well? For example, Heida has not been active on the site for quite a while yet her portfolio still attracts an unbalanced and advantageous amount of attention because she is locked into that position for legacy reasons. Now on the other hand, Judi and Bear Music are very active and in recent times have become quite the site celebrities. Knowing that, I'd rather they are elevated higher on that chart and receive the recognition for this effort resulting in more attention to their portfolios or otherwise.

I guess I'm looking for the "In Your Face" stats to be more recent as this will fit well with the spirit of competition and encourage greater retention with those who are slipping away. It serves to be somewhat self-governing and also a more honest snapshot of the site's current community.

The old guard should be recognized and appreciated but there are sooo many new up and comers that will never receive the recognition essential for them to be superstars. I'd like to be able to easily identify them but I just can find a quick way to do so at this time. Sort of a shame huh??

Its a bit of work but certainly a useful enhancement. In my opinion at least. It also does not threaten the current structure of the site but rather acts as a quick snapshot of our current history which is changing everyday on DPC.

I certainly can't argue with any of this.

I disagree.

' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', '/') + 1) . ' Heida has not entered a challenge sine June 2007, yet since that time her Fav Photographer number has increased by 110. Why is that? Perhaps some run into her photos in various places on this site, like her work, and add her as a Fav? Maybe they've found inspiration in some of her work? Could be they ran into some entirely different photographer on this site that they like, wandered around in that photographers portfolio and noticed her name on someone else's list?

Who knows? Does it matter? What those stats tell me is that people are still discovering Heida's work and view it quite favorably.

As for the "current community"...last I looked (a few minutes ago) Heida is paying annual dues and maintaining her membership here.

Perhaps if it's desirable to see who is "up and coming" in the ranks, a link could be added to the 'Top Favorite Photographers' that would display a page of all members in sortable order of 'Favs' numbering?

We've been running eliters.com, a site for organizing tournaments in online card and board games, for like 10 years now. We ran into the same issue, that once you have competed a LOT your average basically gets frozen and sees no movement. There was a groundswell of requests for "quarterly stats" as well as "lifetime stats", and we finally implemented that. It is hugely popular. Both the quarterly and the lifetime rankings show on the front page for every league. Quarterly stats are reset to zero for all players each quarter, so we have like four mini-competitions or recognition as "best of the best" each year.

In Eliters Yahoo Spades, for example, the league where I mostly hang out now, I'm running 4th lifetime, and only a handful of people have a chance, realistically, of ever overtaking me. On the other hand, I don't have a snowflake's chance in hell of ever overtaking homercat or billybuford, both of whom have played in the league as long as I have and have stratospheric ratings. On the other hand, billy isn't eveb in the top 10 this quarter, whereas I am in 7thy place by a whisker, and that brings a certain satisfaction. I don't think he's actually finished higher than me in any quarter for the last two years, but still I'll never catch him lifetime...

But I digress... The point is, time-based, sortable stats are LOTS of fun. I strongly encourage the powers-that-be to implement them.

I think it would be a great idea to have both an overall average vote received - and at least an annual one. it would give a bettewr reflection of where each of us are year on year.
