I am trying to understand the text in the description of a lens

Example: Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM AF

I am trying to find out what:

EF=?
USM=?
AF=? (I assume that means auto focus)

I see a few variations for a 50mm lens. I know some might be an older generation of that lens. Also variations showing IS (image stabilazation). Just what to be sure of what I am buying. Don't want to miss something.

Thanks,

Casual reply:

• EF = lenses designed for digital bodies
• USM = Ultra Sonic Motor
• AF = Auto Focus

EF = Electro-Focus. It's the most common lens mounting system of Canon cameras (as opposed to the older FD and newer EF-S)

USM = Ultrasonic Motor. A quieter and smoother focusing motor than the cheaper micromotors.

AF = yes, that means Autofocus.

Here's a good link //photonotes.org/articles/beginner-faq/lenses.html

Here are quick answers

ef = electrofocus (nut of it being it will work on all cameras as opposed to ef-s which only works on crops)
usm = ultrasonic motor (the technology used to autofocus the lens)
af = yeah autofocus
