I was reading in one of the sticky's about validation request and winner's having to show validation. I keep my original but don't know how I would let someone know what steps I took in photoshop to polish it up. I have been saving it in .jpeg format as the tutorial explained for posting it but don't understand were to look up the steps I took to get it there. Can anyone inform me?

If you're asked for validation, (I've only ever been asked twice so I'm trying to remember how it works now) Then you'll basically be asked to follow a link where you upload the original RAW file or JPEG. When you do there us a text field for you to input your editing steps and any other comments :-) Whatever you write in there will only be seen by SC.

OK So if I know that I have done contrast/brightness, levels, curves. I just type that in. I was thinking that you would have to upload some type of Photoshop file or something that I didn't know about. I just wanted to know ahead of time because I don't want to get a request and then have to scramble for info and get an image DQ'ed

That's generally sufficient. If there's some unusual trick or unexpected result (how did he make X disappear in Basic?), then we'd need more specifics. As long as we can reasonably reproduce the entry from your notes, that's plenty.

Normally, just a list of the basic steps is fine. If they cannot reproduce the final edit with reasonable fidelity from the given steps, they may ask for additional details. It *is* possible to export a history log from Photoshop, and some folks submit those, but in reality they rarely are very useful above and beyond a basic, hand-typed description.

Just out of curiosity, how do you do that?

What I've taken to doing lately is saving a copy of the image right before I save for web, I use CS2, then I can call it up any old time and get the EXIF/file info from it.

I go right to history, copy & paste my steps into the Photog comments box when I submit.

It takes two minutes and I don't have to get my poor old tired brain to remember anything.

Click on file info from the file drop-down box in PS, then camera data for the settings, then history for the editing steps.

The editing steps vanish when you save for web.

You have to make sure you've set it to save history though. I believe the default setting is off. (may be wrong, not awake enough to look)

Do all ribbon winners get asked to submit the original file for validation? In other words, is this an automatic thing --- or does someone have to challenge the image in order to have the request for validation box appear? I just won my first ribbon and will admit to being a bit freaked out for most of the week, since at the stroke of midnight rollover I learned that (a) I had my first ribbon and (B) there was a validation request and I needed to produce the original file. It felt like "hooray you won" and "someone thinks you broke the rules" all at once and I wasn't sure whether to celebrate or worry. I had processed VERY minimally, so wasn't too concerned about validation, but it was still stressful. If ribbon winner validation is automatic, I will feel better and know for the next time around (...optimistically hoping that one day I might again win a ribbon). :-)

The top 5 images must supply their unaltered original and editing steps within 48 hours. Failure to do so will result in an automatic DQ. When your image is validated or DQ'ed, you will receive a note from SC.
