This is a bit out of the box, but I was thinking that a "Net" winner, based upon a handicap, would be a nice addition to the challenge awards. This isn't meant to take away from the current blue/yellow/red winners, but to provide a way to recognize those working their way up the learning curve.

Here's the basics:
Similar to a golf handicap, take the last highest 15 scores of a photographer's last 30 entries and calcluate their average. You must have at least 30 entries to get a handicap assigned.

For any subsequent challenge, you net someone's score against their handicap to determine their net score. As an example, someone that scored a 5.75 in a challenge with a handicap of 5.5 would have a "net" scrore of +.25.

The person with the highest net score would win the "Net Improved" ribbon for that challenge.

To avoid impacting the prestige of the current ribbons, I would suggest posting the winners on a separate row, in a section devoted to the Net winners.

That's a pretty cool idea ... We could almost start a side challenge of that type also ... similar to the "beat your average" side challenge from last year ... or potentially like the FSM that ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', '/') + 1) . ' SDW has put together ...

Good idea, but I'd suggest the average of fewer than 30 entries as it would be a shame to exclude newbies who are the most likely to improve.

Then you could have the biggest gainer award. % above average for x number of challenges.

It's a fun idea, but the problem with it is people like me: my LIFETIME average is 5.5ish, but I have 5 ribbons, 7 4th-5th place, and a whole BUNCH of top 10's. My best 15 of my last 30 might be even LOWER than 5.5, I am not sure. Why? Because I goof around a lot with off-the-wall images that I know full well will not score very decently, and my average reflects this. Yet, anytime a challenge comes along that happens to fit in my traditional wheelhouse, I am a threat to pop out a high-scoring image. But I wouldn't think it was "fair" for me to receive some sort of an "improvement ribbon" based on this...

You could base it on just your 15 highest of all time. /That would make it fair. It would be harder for those with a higher avg obviously, but the avg would closer reflect your capability.

nevermind!! mine would be 6.944
