I don't know about everyone else but I get text messages when an amber alert goes out. Here is what I am suggesting for the site.

I'm suggesting that if there is an amber alert I would like for the thread to post on top of all other threads just like it did when we had the DPL private threads. I would also like the background of the thread to be amber, like the green for admin posts.

Please send this to D&L for approval. It is very critical that missing children are found with in the first 24 hours of being reported missing. There are a ton of people on this site and if we can keep the thread on top we could save this little girls life.

Though I applaud your dedication, it seems a bit much to ask the site that to share your particular interest as its own.

If this is done, then it wouldn't be long before everyone else with a cause wants equal time.....and that would be fair.

By all means keep your thread alive as you see fit, but this is first and foremost a photography site.

It's a thread for missing children what the hell is wrong with that? I don't care if it's a photography site or not, there are people with kids on this site and for you to say something like is down right shitty. Your response has lost all my respect. What kind of person are you!!!

Children are our future.

Wow dirt, I think you really took that to harshly- back off him a bit! He is entitled to his opinion just as much as you are. I think your response is completely rude and inappropriate, and personally, I hope SC takes action against you for it. Take a second to think of his POV- there are SO many causes out there, so many stories from ALL OVER THE GLOBE (and visitors to this site from all over the glove that probably dont even know what the term amber alert means)- that you could easily be opening a can of worms by doing this. Sad, yes. Deserves a thread, sure, whatever can be done to help. But I personally think you just went to far with your response.

decided to take the four letter words outta your response, eh?

While your original post showed concern this response is downright fanatical. I can understand your concern for finding missing/abducted children but I fail understand your reasoning for why this site in particular should adopt a system like you are suggesting.

It appears there is a site dedicated to this. Yes, it is sad that people exploit children, but is also sad that any exploitation of any kind takes place such as Senior Citizens, animals, spousal abuse, etc. Where would DPC stop at supporting these causes? I agree that an individual thread could be started at your discretion and then people could choose to participate or not.

I don't think Jeb's response indicates anything towards his character, but more towards what this site is primarily about.

How many causes and sites should DPC replicate to make all happy?

The link is to the website for Amber alerts, but also it has a ticker that you can add to your own website. If DPC were to add the ticker, they could put it on the side, like under the announcements heading. It wouldn't have to be a thread that sat on top. Dirt_Diver you went way over the top there on NikonJeb, really uncalled for.

DPC doesn't really need tickers like that. Begin with one, end with many, and it turns into someone's idea of a MySpace page.
If one were so inclined, they could probably add a ticker into their personal profile.

To the OP:

In the end, anything like this would be up to the personal feelings of the website owners, and it is probably in your better interest to bring an idea of this nature up with Langdon himself in an administrative contact. The site is certainly under no obligation, and attacking someone for having a difference of opinion on this will only pull more people away from your efforts instead of endearing them to you.

should severe weather reports from around the world be broadcast too? Other stories of localised regional interest?

I like how they put the Ambert Alert info up on the road signs. I think it makes sense to put the info there, where drivers can keep an eye out for the car of the perpetrator. Putting a sign on DPC is not likely to help find a missing child, unless of course the missing child wanders within sight of the computer.

Ok, while I agree that Dirt_Divers response to Jeb is down right hurtful and wrong, is there a reason for DD being so passionate about this. I'm kinda shocked to see him lash out at Jeb the way that he did, and proud that Jeb has stayed away from this. But it does make one wonder what has happened in the past to cause an otherwise levelheaded fellow to erupt like he did.

Agree....some sort of "issue" probably in the past would explain his outburst.

I'm gonna have to agree with Jeb on this one, for me this site is a hobby and while we do help each other, alot of times its in a photography related way. I have no problem with a thread about this but I for one would not want this site to start notifying me about these things.
I also agree that if this started many people would have something they want to be added to the list.
At any rate, we can't even get '' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/1.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/1.gif', '/') + 1) . '' Langdon to give us bigger image sizes in the challenges, I don't think we need to worry about him implementing something like this.....

You know what you all are right, I did respond with my mouth faster than anything else and I do apologize to nikonjeb. In fact I only pray for him. I pray that nothing happens to him or his family and he posts about it. I pray that no on like him says something like this is a photography thread and to keep his family tragedy's off the site. I don't mean this sarcastically I mean this with all seriousness.

Yes I take child abductions very seriously and yes I think a well known public site like this should give something more back to community. Look at how many people there are on the site and think of all the places we go. Why wouldn't you want to help some child that was abducted from their parents or anyone for that matter?

If anyone thinks that this site shouldn't at least try to do something to HELP another human being then I only pray that someone is looking over you and nothing serious happens to you.

BTW I am seriously disgusted and actually considering walking away from this site tonight. I am in tears right now thinking of all the stubborn people out there that would just sit there and watch something so horrible happen to some child and not want to even lift a finger to try to help.

May nothing ever happen to you or your children and if it does you can still count on me to help get the word out even if you don't care or you don't think it will happen to you.

You ASSUME much more than you should Joe, just because someone has an opinion that we should not do as you suggest than that means we wouldn't lift a finger to help someone? Who the heck are YOU, knowing really no more about alot of us than a screen name to suggest this? Your apology to Jeb is empty and sounds more like a shakedown threat than anything else. I think your MOUTH continues to move alot faster than your BRAIN.

The sad fact of missing/abused/abducted children is that most are by a parent.

It's a very, very sad fact. *sigh*

If only people would make better choices in life... the children in this world would be much safer. *sigh*

Joe,
I believe you have unfairly characterized many of the people on this site. Amber alerts are, at best, regional, for a reason. As close, physically (compared to those in California, for example), as I am to this one, it is not being broadcast here.

To broadcast it on an international site, where a large chunk of the population may not even know what an Amber alert is, probably isn't going to be a big help. It can make us feel better by making us feel like we are doing something, but in the end, letting someone in Iceland or South Africa know about it probably isn't effective.

Putting the ticker on your personal site, and on your facebook account would probably do a lot more good, as it would get the word out to people in the area that can *do* something about it.

I understand your desire to do something, truly I do. As a parent of a 7 and 4 years olds, I cannot imagine the anguish the parents must go through -- even if it is a familiar abduction (or maybe especially if it is a familiar abduction). But, I don't know how a ticker or announcement on dpc will help beyond what is already done. If it is in an area that dpc'ers live, they will hear it on the radio, the TV, road signs, etc. If it is not in an area where dpc'ers live, then ????

I suggest that you take a break from this thread for a few minutes or so. Your emotions are obviously running high, and that is not a good time to make a decision (like leaving the site) or disagreeing with someone, because it leads to saying and doing things we may later regret.

That is completely fine for us all to have our own opinions but when I say "lift a finger" it's not like i am asking you to go outside and scope out the neighborhood for this creep but for you to sit there and say that you don't think this site should at least do something to try to help a missing child then yes I will ASSUME that you as a person could care less about other children and don't want to even back me up and help get the word around all because you think this site should strictly be about photography.

I don't mean to bring these peoples tragedies into this thread but think about all the people that lost family members, or had heart attacks. How many people couldn't afford their bills and the site helped them. None of that had to do with photography but what if someone popped in and said something like "Oh yeah your brother died, boo freaking hoo. Lets get a nude challenge"... Wouldn't you get a little angry? I DID when NJ said what he said. IMO it's the same thing. Same with you. If you don't want to help don't, but again I PRAY NOTHING HAPPENS TO YOU OR YOUR FAMILY.

There are thousands of people on this site, and millions of views within a weeks time, I'm not saying that my suggestion would find the child but it doesn't hurt the site in anyway to put my suggestion into play. The more eyes you have out there looking the better the chances are to find this child faster.

And for what itís worth I have had something happen in the past but I choose not to talk about it.

Also I am not asking for a ticker to be added to the site. Please read my OP. I am only asking that the amber alert thread be posted to the top of the threads on the home page. I understand not wanting to junk the site up with tickers and stuff like that but if I created a thread for an amber alert I would like to see it on the front page for at least a week. If it was there I know people would look at it. I know it would do much better here than on my site (which btw I will be adding it) but the point is to get people to look at it. All I am asking is for people to look for this child abductor.

Dirt_diver, you have a pretty good pulpit all ready for you to preach from at //www.treasureshackonline.com/dpc.php . You could post informative links, links to the amber alert site, links to whatever you want there to get your message and cause in front of a lot of people. Why not put your energy into that instead of freaking out here?

There's no shortage of crappy situations in the world, and if a thread popped up every time something bad happened the server would be reduced into a pile of bubbling plastic. Just because people don't want to see it here doesn't mean they don't care.

I never said you were asking for a ticker and i did read the original post or else i would not have responded. you are also not listening to the other very valid points being offered here by people who are remaining civil. An amber alert jumping to the top of the threads would not be effective since it would only be in the vicinity of perhaps %5 of the members here. And again what happens when everyone else who has a cause (which would be just as valid) gets there posts higlighted and jump to the top, then before long the threads read more like a news service than a photography site. and despite how it apparently makes me look in your eyes, no, i don't want that.

Joe
The abduction of children is a serious issue, and I hope that they find this child as soon as possible, just as I hope they find all children currently missing around the world. I commend you for being passionate about this cause, and encourage you to use whatever means possible to get the word out.

I had no idea what an Amber Alert was until the earlier Thread you created.

However, I can also understand the reluctance of people to support a thread being attached to the top of the list all week. Most of the people here are not from that area, and therefore, although tragic, there is very little I or many others can do. If we have a thread for Amber Alerts, do we add a seperate one for Missing Aussie Children, or those in Europe. Without mentioning any other causes, having Threads held on top of the list, just to do with Abducted Children, could become a significant number.

I suggest that you bump the thread a few times to get attention, and post links from your Profile and TSO. Also, if you create another thread for another Amber Alert, I suggest including the State in the Title, which could add to its effect as it will get the attention of those in that area.

I think that the biggest issue with this is the level of international users here, not just from the US. That plays a major role in something like this. In Mexico for example, there is an estimated average of 500 kidnappings PER MONTH. Why should only amber alerts from the US be listed? And at what point does this site not become a missing kids system and not a photography forum. There are websites for amber alerts, for missing kids, for news, for shopping, for photography, etc., etc. If somebody wants to visit one of those, GREAT, more power to them, get involved in protecting your community, and those around you. But this IS SIMPLY NOT THE PLACE FOR IT.
