Big props to Are ( trollman) on his PB, 1st blue ribbon, and first 7+ score.

Are and I have been friends for a long time. We worked for the same multinational company, him in Norway, me in the US. He’s the one that introduced me to DPC a few years ago. Are now works for a different company, but we’ve kept in touch. Any time I go to Norway on business I try to take an extra day so Are and I can go shooting together, sometimes for challenges, sometimes not.

Are has been on DPC for a while. Until today he’s had a couple of notable stats.

3 ribbons (all yellow) yet never scored over 7. A lot of people have “7s No Ribbons” to their name, I don’t know of anyone else that had 3 ribbons and no 7s. Personally, I had three 7s before I won my first ribbon.

One of his ribbons is a “Rikki” ribbon. That’s a ribbon that was awarded after most of Rikki’s ribbon winning shots were disqualified, usually several months after the challenge.

So, a couple of weeks ago I contacted Are and said I was going to be in Norway and we should plan a photo outing. He agreed. He’s wanted to go to this old lighthouse in Norway at a place called Verdens Ende, the End of the World, at the southern coast in Norway. Sounded good to me.

He also agreed a while back to buy the 24-105L lens that came with my 5D Mark II kit. I didn’t need it since I already had that lens. So I brought the lens with me. We make plans to go out on Sunday, Feb. 22.

He picks me up at the hotel and we start out for the coast. As we were driving there, the sun came out over a snow covered field. I suggested we stop and take a few shots. He mounts his new 24-105L for the first time and we fire off a few shots. I’m sure he was thinking, “man, this guy from the southern US has never seen this much snow. In Norway we get this all time. What a boring place to shot.” But he’s a nice guy and stopped there anyway. Afterward we proceed for the rest of the 2 hour drive to the lighthouse at Verdens Ende. We both get our shots after walking through 4-5 feet of snow to get up to the old Viking lighthouse.

We go around to a few other places and then head back. I knew I wanted to enter a shot of the lighthouse for the Calendar challenge. I was worried he wanted to enter the same thing.

He sent me a couple of shots he took and said he wanted to enter the field of snow. I thought he was just being nice because I knew the lighthouse was way cooler and would score better. Being the competitor that I am, I didn’t argue with him. I felt a little bad because I knew he wanted to go to the lighthouse for some time.

His entry

My entry

After all is said and done, his landscape wins the blue, I get 6th place with the lighthouse. Not bad really, but I was so sure I had snatched a winning shot away from him. Little did I know.

Not only that, but I brought him the lens he used for the shot, he won a ribbon on the very first thing he shot with the lens, and I was MY idea to stop there and I have the EXACT same shot!

Anyway, sorry for the long post, but I just wanted to congratulate Are on his PB, first blue ribbon, and first 7+. And never let it be said that Are and I won’t go to “The End of the World” for a challenge!

Welcome to the 7+ club, Are. Next time I’m in Norway I’ll show you the secret handshake!

That's a great DPC story! Congrats to both of you, but as someone still pursuing that first blue ribbon, big kudos to you Are! As an aside... I was in Maine on the sunday that that same challenge entry phase ended, and we got two feet of snow that night, the next Tuesday we had beautiful blue skies and a wide open vista to shoot essentially the same "January" shot. Timing is everything :-)

right, that's fair, everything in your home court is over 100 years old.

Looks like you're feeling a little cocky with that shiny blue ribbon in your profile now. ;-) Kinda clashes against all those yellows though.

Thanks for the story, and congratulations to the two of you. Both are excellent images, I'd say it was a worth while trip.

Excuses, excuses. :)

But seriously, good point (rats, he caught me!). Let's do the next weekly member challenge whatever it'll be. What do you say? The looser agrees to create a thread called "TrollMan (or scarbrd) beat me in the shoot-out".

** TrollMan is wondering if SC can be bribed into making the next member challenge about snow **

But how can you shoot for a challenge if I'm not there to hand you the lens and point to what you should shoot at? ;-)

and with the DQ of the previously 2nd place shot, both are in the top 5. Not bad for a Sunday drive. ;-)

Hey now... I bought the lens from you, took you for a drive, stopped the car when you asked me to (you were my guest after all) and took the liberty of also using my camera wherever we stopped - AND nobody pointed at anything for me to shoot. Sheesh - no appreciation! :)

Let's see it then :) And how's about that shoot-out? Do I hear a chicken in the distance? hehe
