I could have posted my score before voting began. I knew it would be sub par and I knew why. Yet I entered it. I could tell you why its doing so terribly but that might remove my anonymity. Suffice to say, I am not getting hammered for DNMC :)

edit to add: I have considered self-dq'ing this image. (Can't because I am not eligible) But on the other hand, I'll treat this entry as an experiment that has gone horribly horribly wrong.

Don't give up--it might not be "dpc-friendly" but that does not mean it is not good. (I think if you work out all the "nots" in there, it turns out positive! :-)

I think everyone needs to agree to disagree on this challenge. We have all entered a shot that we liked and yet, between uncalibrated monitors (both on entrants and voters monitors) and misunderstanding the challenge about there is a lot of higgledy piggledy in the way the entries look and the way the voters are seeing the entries....in the physical sense as well as meeting the challenge.

So let's stop the bickering and realize that this isn't going to change the crap scores that many of us have, including me...and look forward to the next challenge. And if you see fit to try and calibrate your monitor before next week...then all the better for everyone.

Amen, Judi. What I find fascinating in this particular challenge is how strictly adherence to the rules is being argued, when many challenge top placers are often rather liberal with their interpretation of the challenge :-)

You are absolutely right, I (we) do take all this too serioulsy at times. I'm gonna chill from now on ;)

Although I do get the right hump when someone who knows nothing about me accuses me of cast retaliatory votes just because I annoyed at a few low scores. Ho Hum!

Sorry about the score, at least you got lots of comments!

I agree, I think I'm going to go pop open a cold one and relieve the pain.

The thing that is weird is how bad some of the photographs look on a laptop. Huge difference whether you were viewing it straight on or an angle. Didn't make that much of a difference on the colored pictures, but on the light on white, it was a huge difference.

It's a challenge by itself for many photographers to successfully take a picture of a substantially light colored subjects on a white or bright background. A white wedding dress on a snowy surface in sunlight is one example.

I feel that this particular challenge is challenging us (and at the same time teaching many of us) how to master light colors on bright backgrounds.

Personally I will never deduct points for pictures that are not meeting how I interpret challenges. But if two pictures are equally good but with different colors (in this case), I feel I need to score the one that has mastered the technique of light on white (or bright) highest of the two. So penalizing is not the word. It's simply just a balance between the pictures I feel meet the challenge better than others.

Absolutely agree! Eye angle to a laptop LCD makes a big difference. I have one comment which doesn't match my image.... unless the voter was viewing a laptop LCD on the oblique.

Yup...me too...I have one particular comment that refers to colours in my background that are absolutely non-existant...even with the curves dragged all the way down!

What I find weird is how people are demanding pure white ON THE MONITOR. The background may well be white, but due to shadows, lighting etc it comes out grey or mixed shades of white / grey. It's still a white background, even if it was close to black due to darkness it would still be a white background, though I give you that probably wouldn't be the best entry.

As for my shot personally, doing average, pretty much as I expected it to. I liked it, and took it for my wife who loved it, so I'm pleased! Oh and someone commented it was "elegant" so that just made my day!

They're just looking for a high key, I guess. I find the bright white backgrounds fascinating, because I find them hard to do, but I don't mind a darker white background if it's well done. Some subjects aren't even possible on a completely bright white background.

Naturally :-)

"Pure white" backgrounds is not the issue for me. I'm referring to shots that have used extreme contrast to achieve "white", which usually reduces the quality and detail of the subject at the expense of creating the illusion of white.

In any event, you sound like a seasoned pro, and probably see things I - a beginner - do not.

I am about as far from a pro as one can get :) I just happened to read an article by a pro that described how to get white backgrounds in your photos.

Doesn't seem to be doing me a lot of good though. My main subject is almost white, but has some darker elements to it. Cool to get a fav even though not many comments. But I can't complain as I have not taken time to comment on any photos yet either. But I will.

I agree with the comments about calibrated monitors and LCD screens. I use a Huey to calibrate the CRT on my main computer, but when I view photos on my wife's laptop I never know if I am seeing things correctly or not.

I shouldn't complain but I made the mistake of falling in love with my entry so now I'm heart broken at it's performance.

You're not alone hotpasta. I've been on a gutterball roll for weeks :-(

Well, dropped only slightly now from 6.75ish to 6.65ish which would still be a personal best :-)

It is not my usual style of image/photography however--so it kinda says something about my normal style, don't it? :-)

I was kinda hoping for a PB but... that doesn't look like that's gonna happen....
03/03/2009 01:46:08 AM · #121
Yea. If I can pull off this PB and then get hotpasta's MOJO back before he notices it's missing.....
03/03/2009 11:44:33 AM · #122
Shocked, stunned, and almost speechless...lest I break the spell.
Looks like I am heading toward a PB.

I have to tell you that I love that I am now getting comments (as few of them as I'm getting) but I just had to share this one. I don't even know why people would make a comment like this. No comment would work so much better. LOL

"why would someone want a picture of that? your not cool!"
