If anyone's interested - looks like a good deal:

D200 for $600 at Best Buy.com

Damn it. I spent a whole lot more than that just two years ago :D

I guess that means that two years from now, the D3x will be $1000. I dont mind waiting.

That sounds like a great deal. I would just advice you to confirm three times that it is in stock before you proceed.

I was going to get the d90 this weekend but this is tempting. Errrr..... still going to get the d90 I think. Might waffle on this a bit though.

Unless you are going to step up top the D300 I would go with the D90. It has the newer technology, CMOS sensor, newer focusing system and of course video.

I second that.

Check here... 90% of what is good in these pics is because of the D90 and the zoom lens. You can easily see that it was done by a novice amateur (me) but the camera really stepped up the game IMHO.

Ok ok, good to hear. I will stop by B&H sometime this week and join the club. BTW Prash, nice pics - #11 and #18 I think standout. Did you make that site in Lightroom or something else? I am just now learning LR2 and wow it's powerful.

Nevermind, I just found your other thread and you did use lightroom. Good stuff, keep it up.

How so? What did the D90 do in the pics the D200 could not? (not being a smart ass, I'm just curious)

Seems to me the D200 has been and is still a mighty fine camera and perhaps it and some better glass would be a worthy investment.

Good question. And honestly, I cant claim that D90 does a thing that D200 doesnt except video. D90 however may do a few things better than D200 based on the specs, but results would be hard to measure quantitively using just my pictures, unless you would be welling to trust the tests here. I also did not use D200 ever, so hard to say. An experienced user may have been able to get similar/better results using a D200, I cant argue with that.

Given all this, if given a choice, I would get D90 again. Just MHO.

I have a D200 and a D300 and the big difference between the two is the focus system and the CMOS sensor, both of which the D90 have. The focus is faster and more accurate on the D300, especially with moving targets. The CMOS sensor on the D300 allows me to shoot at much higher ISO's than the D200 thus giving me faster shutter speeds. The type of shooting I do that really helps me get sharper shots. With that said the D200 is still a great camera. It is a tank and will take rough treatment. It is not only heavier duty but is watersealed. So if you want a more pro level build then the D200 is likely a better deal for you. If you see a greater need for the better focus and noise control then go with the D90 and you get video thrown in.

My D70s is dying, and I really want a D300.

With what you said about the focus and noise control, should I wait and save up for the D300?

I keep seeing these stupidly cheap prices for the D200, and for a third the money, I'm tempted.

Is a D200 substantially improved from my D70s, or just sturdier?

I've got a D70 and a D200 - The D200 is much better than the D70 imho. Some improvements in the D200 compared to the D70:

Image quality / 10 mp
Focus (11 AF points, grouping options, speed (though like D70, only one cross-type AF point)
Raw+Jpeg (any compression - D70 limits you to basic jpeg compression)
5 fps vs. 3
More external controls / less menu dependent than D70
Build quality / tactile feel
bigger LCD screen (though the D70s I think is bigger than the D70 here)
high ISO noise (D200 has slight edge but its close)

Disadvantages:
Battery life - D200 battery life is about 2/3-1/2 that of D70
D200 can't use wireless remote (why Nikon does this I don't know)
D200 is bigger/heavier

I've never used a D300 but I'd take one over a D200 for the low light performance that is reportedly better than the D200. That said, I won't be getting rid of my D200 any time soon. Eventually will replace my D70 but will wait a few years. DPReview.com would have more information regarding +/- between the two.

I just fell over reading about the BestBuy price for a D200! Add a 1 to the front of that and that's what I paid for the body 2 yrs ago. Whom ever buys one now will get an excellent camera for the price! I just ordered a D700 and am waiting for it to come in. I feel like a school boy on Christmas eve!!

I'm going to be selling my D200 to help pay for the 700 and $700 is what I was hoping to get for a pristine body and grip. Maybe I need to re-evaluate?

Hey Jeb, if you can get the D200 for a good price, I'd go that route. I have two of them and am thrilled. You wil find a SIGNIFICANT difference between the D70 and the D200. Knowing how reluctant you are to chase camera upgrades, the D200 may well last you for a number of years without compromising image quality.

So, got my new D200 about three weeks ago...well, it's on its way back to the store!! Major issues with the shutter staying open and locking up the camera. The interesing part was how Best Buy handled it!! When I called them yesterday to report the problem and return the camera, I was informed that the 14-day return period had passed...I had had the camera 21-days. Fortunetely, after talking with the customer service rep he decided that even thought he was probably going to get in trouble a new camera was warrented and was shipping one out asap. I am impressed with Best Buy for doing the right thing!!

Yea I have had my share of fun with BB. They are towards the bottom in my list of experiences. I still rank Amazon the best in electronics purchase and post-purchase experiences. Adorama comes second. Then B&H.

I got 2 D200's on different occasions from BestBuy.com and I also experienced shutter lock up on both copies during continuous firing. Are these cameras defective or what?. One of them must have been a first generation copy (though new) because it had banding issues. Banding was very common with the first copies of Nikon D200! The Nikon D200 is a good camera but I would advice that if you get one from Best Buy (online) you put it through some rigorous work to ensure that you have a good copy before the end of the 14 day return period.

The $599 sale on the D200 is back on again at BestBuy.com.

Link: BestBuy's D200

A co-worker ordered it on Sunday and it's on the truck for delivery.
