Is anyone from around there?

Can anyone tell me anything about the Guleph area?

We just found out yesterday that my daughter has been accepted to travel to Guleph for a Girl Guide ( I think they are called Girl Scouts in Canada ) Jamboree July next year. She will be one of 8 girls representing New Zealand. I am so proud of her :) It will be alot of hard work fundraising but it will be worth it for the amazing experiences I am sure she will have!

Guelph is just 30 minutes from where I am. It's a small city but with nice people. I'm glad she is coming in the summer because the weather will be nice. Probably between 20-30 degrees Centigrade.

From Wikipedia:

Guelph (Canada 2006 Census population 114,943[1]) is a city located in the Southwestern region of Ontario, Canada.

Known as "The Royal City", Guelph is roughly 28 kilometres (17 mi) east of Kitchener-Waterloo and 100 kilometres (62 mi) west of downtown Toronto at the intersection of Highway 6 and Highway 7. It is the seat of Wellington County, but as a separated municipality, the city is not part of the county. As one entity, Guelph and Wellington County have a population of 200,425.

Because of its low crime rates, clean environment and generally high standard of living, Guelph is consistently rated as one of the country's most livable cities: Moneysense magazine ranked Guelph fourth in the country to live in 2007 [3], and was also rated among Canada's ten best places to live by Chatelaine magazine.

Lived not too far from Guelph almost 20 years. Have friends there and used to fly in to Guelph with a small private plane. Guelph was in fact the destination of my first solo cross country flight! :)

I have also been to the camp where you're daughter probably will be staying.

Quiet little town. Birth home of John McCrae which I'm sure she'll visit. John McCrae wrote the famous poem called "Flanders Fields" while in the war.

Kitchener and Waterloo is right next to Guelph (as you see in jeger's post) and is where RIM (Research in Motion) lives. They created and manufacture the Blackberry.

I know very well one of the past girl guide leaders in Guelph by name Linda Willis. If your daughter is going to be involved with "Jamboree on the air", I know the people that will put it on (Linda is one of them). Great bunch!

She'll have a blast! :)

Thanks TrollMan All these little tidbits are interesting. The camp will be held at Guelph Lake Conservation Area , is that where you are thinking? Do you mean jamboree on the air as in planes or as in airwaves?

That's the place! Jamboree on the air (JOTA) is world wide and by means of radio waves. It is in October though so the Jamboree she is going to is then clearly not in combination with this.

They do call them Girl Guides in Canada too. Both my wife and mother-in-law were leaders for many years. The girls (and boy scouts) often join the Royal Canadian Air Cadets if they decide to continue as they get older.

Pack some "bug juice", insect repellent, with a decent DEET content.

Sun block with decent SPF.

Pack clothes for HOT weather.

Sorry guess I made the fatal mistake of thinking that Canada is the same as USA. Must annoy Canadians! Just like us Kiwis get annoyed when we get lumped with the Aussies!

Ralph will your daughter be going?

Charlie, you can look here Guelph Ontario Canada, it's a beautiful place in the summer and there's lots to do, not that they won't be busy enough already with all the activities planed by the guides.

She'll be fine as long as she tells everyone that she's an Aussie :) We don't much like Kiwis around here, they never seam to be in season :)

All the best to you and yours.

MAX!

Orillia is beautiful in the summer as well, but I'm a little bias :)

How long are they here for and who is bringing them? Is it you, or just a leader?

I have family in Guelph. My Uncle (now passed away) worked at the University for a long time. I still have cousins around there now.

Niagara on the Lake is beautiful, but probably wouldn't be as fun as Niagara Falls for children.

There is lots of things to do and see within a few hours of Guelph: Niagara Falls, Toronto, the Muskokas (Cottage Country). Of course if you want to REALLY experience Canada, you would have to visit Ontario (Central), British Columbia (West Coast), and Nova Scotia and PEI (East Coast). Canada is a VERY big country.

Then there's the Badlands and Drumheller (Dinosaur country) but that's definitely not close to Guelph.

There will be 3 leaders and 8 girls aged about 13-18( I would love to go but it will be bad enough fundraising for her let alone me as well! ) hopefully they will travel around for a week or so before, keep the suggestions coming :)

Sent you a PM. You should be proud, that is quite some achievement.
